A state of emergency has been issued in El Salvador, the area hardest hit. At least 32 deaths have been reported there, including many children. Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua have all also reported numerous deaths. At least 250,000 people have been affected by the rains and many have sought refuge in shelters. Central America has been deluged by heavy rains since last week when Hurricane Jova swept through the area as a powerful Category 2 storm. A tropical depression also battered the area with additional torrential rains. Little improvement is expected immediately as forecasts call for more rain for the saturated region.
