Home  |  News Briefs  |  U.S.  |  World   |  Celeb Buzz  |  Entertainment  |  Sports  |  Business  |  Health  |  Sci / Tech  |  Politics  |  Weird & Offbeat   --- Advertisment --- Palin Gives Post-Resignation Announcement Interviews; Mum About 2012 White House Bid July 7, 2009 11:01 a.m. EST --- Advertisment --- Kris Alingod - AHN Contributor Juneau, AK (AHN) - As pundits debate the reasons for her sudden resignation, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin explained to TV networks her decision to step down and plans for her political future. She refused to confirm speculation she would run in 2012 for president, but said the White House "Department of Law" would protect her in any future national campaign from the ethics controversies that have hounded her in Alaska. The first woman vice presidential candidate of the GOP, Palin announced last Friday that she would resign effective on July 26, a year and a half before her first term as governor ends. She cited the 15 ethics complaints against her, which were all dismissed, as having taken up state resources as the reason. "The State has wasted thousands of hours of your time and shelled out some two million of your dollars to respond to 'opposition research' - that's money not going to fund teachers or troopers - or safer roads... It's pretty insane - my staff and I spend most of our day dealing with this instead of progressing our state now. I know I promised no more 'politics as usual,' but this isn't what anyone had in mind for Alaska," she had said in press conference that has befuddled even conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh. Fishing with her husband Todd in Bristol Bay on Monday, Palin told FOX she was setting up a legal defense fund and that, "Critics want to put you on a course of personal bankruptcy, so you can't afford to serve." The 45-year-old mother of five added, "Average, hard-working Americans need to be able to get out there, unrestrained, and fight for what is right. Fight for energy independence and national security, fight for a smaller government instead of this big government overgrowth that Obama is ushering in." She skirted clearing up reports of her presidential aspirations. "I want to work, right now, for people who are going to work either in office or out of office for the right things," she said. "Those principles that build up America, those who are inspired by the values of America, and will not deride or apologize for the values we hold as Americans." With four TV crews on the fishing boat along with her, Palin criticized the press, decrying the double standard she and her children had to endure. She had previously compared coverage of President Barack Obama's daughters with that of her 18-year-old daughter Bristol, who gave birth to a son last December and whose pregnancy was announced only three days after Palin was named running mate by Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). The governor also told ABC she was surprised by how her resignation was "such a darn big deal." She added, "I said before I stood in front of the mic the other day, you know, politically speaking -- if I die, I die. So be it." Asked again if she would run for president, she replied, "Don't know what the future holds. I'm not gonna shut any door. That -- who knows what doors open. I can't predict what the next fish run's gonna look like down on the Nushagak [River]. So I certainly can't predict what's gonna happen in the next couple of years." But Palin also said she "didn't need a title to be the one to usher in what it is that needs to be done in our state or our country," and that if she were to run for office in the future she would not face the same controversies that hounded her in Alaska because, "I think on a national level, your department of law there in the White House would look at some of the things that we've been charged with and automatically throw them out." ABC made sure to point out in its report that there is no "Department of Law" in the White House. Such comments were fodder for Palin's critics last year, when she said she has foreign policy experience because her state is beside Russia, that the vice president is "in charge" of the Senate, and that she likes to visit "pro-America areas" of the country like North Carolina. Palin, who was mayor of Wasilla before becoming governor, is credited with renewing enthusiasm for the GOP, but she suffered a significant drop in poll ratings during the last months of the presidential race. She drew large crowds at Republican rallies and took up much of the media coverage that once was largely devoted to then-Sen. Barack Obama, but her relative lack of political experience and a slew of negative reports subsequently pushed the McCain campaign to keep her away from the press. McCain's campaign at the time had cited a "smear campaign" and "sexism" in the media, which covered accusations that she had falsely claimed to have opposed a controversial project called "the Bridge to Nowhere," tried to stifle a three-month long ethics investigation into her dismissal of an Alaska state official, and that the GOP had spent $150,000 on clothes, accessories and make-up for her during the campaign. A virtual unknown in the national arena until she was named to the ticket on Aug. 29, Palin is a self-confessed hockey mom who got her first passport only in 2007 and who had never met a foreign leader until McCain introduced her to foreign dignitaries last year at the United Nations in New York. Palin had led a campaign beleaguered until the end, having had to defend herself in her first TV interview after the election from criticisms by anonymous McCain aides. The criticisms hound her to this day -- last week a Vanity Fair article caused top McCain campaign officials to openly exchange accusations.
