"The explosion occurred at 6:20 Moscow time (10:20 a.m. EDT) presumably during the disposal of ammunition. As a result six officers were killed and 12 injured," he said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. The blast occurred at a military complex in the province of Astrakhan, the source said. Explosions at artillery depots have plagued the army, which is hounded by accusations of regulatory corner cutting and negligence. A fire in June at an arms depot east of Moscow killed two people and injured more than 40.
