The previous prime minister, Mustafa Abushagur, was dismissed through a vote of no confidence earlier this month after his choice of ministers ran into protests from within the assembly and outside. Libya desperately needs a viable government so that it can focus on reconstruction and on healing regional divisions opened up by the war which toppled Muammar Gaddafi last year.
