Disney Sued Over Pooh Royalties
November 13, 2009 10:05 a.m. EST
Anne Lu - Celebrity News Service News Writer
Los Angeles, CA (CNS) - The Mouse House is in legal trouble over Winnie the Pooh royalties. Disney is being sued by the estate of the man who made the orange bear famous over unpaid royalties.
Lawyers for the late Stephen Slesinger filed documents at the Los Angeles District Court last week against Disney for allegedly hiding the amount of money it has earned from merchandising.
Slesinger purchased the U.S. and Canadian distribution rights for Pooh from its creator A.A. Milne in 1931. He added the honey-loving mammal's iconic red shirt and developed Pooh products.
The rights were then licensed to Disney in 1961, eight years after his death.
Lawyers for his family claimed Disney practiced "past improper business practices" and concealed the amount of money earned from the merchandise.
Disney denies the allegation, saying they have dealt with the issue in September when a court ruled they have the license to the Pooh products.
