With less than a month left before the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship tips off, 8 teams from across the continent have gathered in Taiwan for the purpose of gauging their mettle in a testy two-week warm-up tournament before the Olympic qualifier. The Jones Cup, an annual tournament formed in honor of former FIBA secretary general Renato William Jones, featured a highly-competitive playing field this year with the participation of reining Asian champ Iran, middle east power Jordan, Northeast Asia contender South Korea, and southeast Asia kingpin Philippines. The squads from the United Arab Emirates, Japan, Malaysia, and host Taiwan also bring more spice in an already pulsating hoops tourney. On the first day of competition alone, the tournament witnessed its first shocker as Smart Gilas Philippines toppled reigning two-time champ Iran 73-59. Using fluid ball execution and sweet shooting from the outside, the Philippines took control of despite the towering presence of 7-foot-2 bigman Hamed Haddadi. Haddadi, a member of the Memphis Grizzlies, finished with a game-high 25 points but was held to below 30 percent shooting. The Philippines leaned on the inside muscle of naturalized center Marcus Douthit, who tallied 20 points and 11 boards in the win. Jordan, South Korea, and Chinese Taipei also opened the tournament on a winning note, but the biggest news of all came from the Philippine team, which looks to regain its long lost luster in Asian basketball. The Philippines, who still holds the highest achievement of an Asian team at the world championship (Bronze at the 1954 World Championship), improved to 2-0 Sunday after dominating Chinese Taipei 90-78.
