ADVERTISEMENT "There was a shooting attack," the spokesman Damir Rosin told AFP. The regional minister Ruslan Balayev died on the spot when his car was attacked in the early morning, he said. His driver also died, Rosin added. Friday's incident follows a string of similarly brazen attacks on officials, including an assassination bid last month that critically wounded the leader of Ingushetia, Yunus-Bek Yevkurov. On Wednesday, the body of a leading rights activist Natalya Estemirova was found in Ingushetia after she was abducted in neighbouring Chechnya. Attacks on authorities, including police and security forces have become almost a daily occurrence in Russia's volatile Northern Caucasus and regions like Ingushetia and Dagestan are of particular concern. In Dagestan, militants last month shot dead the region's long-serving interior minister as he was attending wedding celebrations for a colleague's daughter. Following the attack, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev made a surprise visit to Dagestan, vowing to destroy Islamist militants blamed for the unrest.
