ADVERTISEMENT Tehran has refused to overturn the result of the disputed poll, but supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei agreed to extend by five days a Wednesday deadline to examine vote complaints, ISNA news agency said. As international alarm mounted over the crisis, the most serious challenge to the Islamic regime in its 30-year history, Britain said it was expelling two Iranian diplomats after a similar move by Tehran. At the same time, other European nations hauled in envoys to protest at the election and the repression of protests. Iran's top election watchdog, the Guardians Council, insisted the vote would stand. "We witnessed no major fraud or breach," spokesman Abbasali Kadkhodai said on English-language state television Press TV. "Therefore, there is no possibility of an annulment taking place." The council has acknowledged more votes were cast than there were eligible voters in 50 of 366 constituencies. The opposition claims the June 12 poll that returned President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to power for a second four-year term was rife with fraud. Late on Tuesday, defeated opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi released on his website a report on what had been promised to show "electoral fraud and irregularities." The three-page report called for a "commission of truth and justice acceptable to all the parties to examine the entire election process." It denounced what it claimed was "large-scale" official support for Ahmadinejad and spoke of ballot papers being printed the day of the election without serial numbers, doubts about whether ballot boxes were empty when they arrived at the polls and candidates' representatives being banned from polling places. World leaders are calling for an immediate halt to violence against the protesters and Tehran has fired back, accusing Western governments, particularly Britain and the United States, of interfering. But at a White House news conference, Obama denied meddling in Iran's affairs while saying there were "significant questions about the legitimacy" of the poll. "We can't say definitively what exactly happened at polling places throughout the country. What we know is that a sizable percentage of the Iranian people themselves spanning Iranian society considered this election illegitimate. Obama strongly condemned the crackdown on protests and insisted that Tehran "must govern through consent, and not coercion." He described as "heartbreaking" the shooting on a Tehran street of a young woman, Neda Agha-Soltan, whose death has become a symbol for the opposition and been mourned around the world. The White House posted a video on its website on Tuesday featuring a simultaneous translation into Farsi of Obama's comments on Iran. The White House website, www.whitehouse.gov, also posted a Farsi-language transcript of the remarks about the situation in Iran made by Obama. Iran's state media said at least 17 people had been killed and many more wounded in the unrest that has convulsed the nation for 12 days. Hundreds of protesters, prominent reformists and journalists have been rounded up by the authorities. In the latest crackdown on the media, Iran arrested a British-Greek journalist working for the Washington Times, various sources confirmed. Tehran streets remained tense on Tuesday a day after hundreds of riot police armed with steel clubs and firing tear gas, backed up by the Basij militia, broke up an opposition rally. Demonstrators had gathered in defiance of the elite Revolutionary Guards, which warned of a "decisive and revolutionary" riposte to protests. Mousavi has urged his supporters to continue demonstrating but to adopt "self-restraint" to avoid more bloodshed. Despite the media restrictions, images of police brutality have spread worldwide via amateur video over the Internet. France, Finland and Sweden summoned the Iranian ambassadors in their capitals, with Paris protesting at the "brutal repression" of demonstrators. Iran singled out Britain as one of the leading instigators of the post-election unrest, with Khamenei last week describing it as the "most evil" of its enemies. London is pulling out families of embassy staff and, along with some other European nations, warned its nationals against travel to Iran. Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Iran had taken "the unjustified step of expelling two British diplomats over allegations that are absolutely without foundation." "In response to that action we informed the Iranian ambassador earlier today that we would expel two Iranian diplomats from their embassy in London," he told lawmakers.
