Search web search Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology US-TECH Summary Reuters - Thursday, February 18 Send IM Story Print For Apple suppliers, loose lips can sink contracts LONGHUA, China /TAIPEI - The massive manufacturing complex in the South China city of Longhua resembles an industrial fortress. To enter the facility, workers swipe security cards at the gate. Guards check the occupants of each vehicle with fingerprint recognition scanners. Container trucks and fork lifts rumble nonstop across the sprawling compound, serving a grid of factories that churn out electronics goods for top global brands around the clock. Industry explores new roads with free maps BARCELONA/AMSTERDAM - The satellite navigation industry is looking for direction now that Google <GOOG.O> and Nokia <NOK1V.HE> are offering free maps on smart phones, with the issue a hot topic at the Mobile World Congress industry fair in Barcelona this week. Nokia <NOK1V.HE>, the world's largest cellphone maker, last month followed Google <GOOG.O> in offering free maps on some 20 million cellphones, directly impacting the navigation business across the globe. Networks desperately seek data capacity BARCELONA - Call it network congestion, capacity crunch or data overload -- the complaints aired at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week were all about cellphone network operators trying to find ways of profitably handling an explosion in mobile data traffic. Management of the data traffic has become a priority for the telecoms industry as mobile internet usage is booming but data revenues for the phone companies grow slowly at best. Twitter dating for tech-savvy singles TORONTO - For tech-savvy singles who are unlucky in love, shy or just looking for a new way to meet people, Flitter could be the answer. Hundreds of singles attended the first Flitter parties across Canada last week in the latest dating game which is a play on words of the microblogging site Twitter and flirting. Google CEO woos suspicious mobile industry BARCELONA - Google's <GOOG.O> Chief Executive Eric Schmidt urged the mobile industry to embrace the mobile Web instead of seeing Google as the enemy, in his first speech to the world's biggest wireless industry fair. Schmidt said the industry stood at an historic moment when the computing power of mobile phones, attractive services and networks that could handle them had come together, and said Google was driving network traffic to the benefit of operators. 100 euros smartphones this year: Symbian BARCELONA will reach the market this year, the chief of the world's most widely used smartphone platform told Reuters in an interview at the Mobile World Congress trade show. FCC to propose faster broadband speeds WASHINGTON to 100 million homes by a decade from now, Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski said. Skype strikes first major mobile deal BARCELONA - Internet telephony firm Skype made its first major leap into cellphones on Tuesday, striking a deal with the largest U.S. mobile carrier Verizon Wireless. Skype's free calls on computers have become an Internet phenomenon since the company was founded in 2002, and it has some 520 million registered users around the globe. Smartphones a growing problem for networks BARCELONA - The chief executive of Vodafone Group Plc <VOD.L>, the world's largest mobile network operator, expressed the fears of many on Tuesday when he said Google Inc <GOOG.O> should not be allowed to dominate the mobile space. Vittorio Colao, speaking ahead of a keynote speech by Google's chief executive, told the Mobile World Congress trade fair in Barcelona that, instead of letting one group dominate, new business models needed to be created to cope with the demand operators are facing for data services. Ericsson market share jumps in Q4: Dell'Oro BARCELONA - Sweden's Ericsson <ERICb.ST> increased the lead on the global mobile network gear market in the fourth quarter, helped by an acquisition of key assets of bankrupt Nortel, research firm Dell'Oro said on Wednesday. Competition for new business in the telecommunications equipment market has been cut-throat during the past few years, driven by Asian vendors, and the outlook remains tough.
