Up to 100 centimetres (39 inches) of snow fell in some mountain areas near the alpine resort Friday and Saturday, the heaviest for a century. Thousands of government workers and soldiers were mobilised for snow-clearing, focusing on roads leading to Pyeongchang. While the storm caused property damage of about 4.8 billion won ($4.3 million) in the area, it helped the resort in Gangwon province overcome one of its perceived weaknesses: a shortage of snow. "We can present a wonderful stage as the venue for winter sports," said Park Jong-Hoon, a senior bidding committee official. Pyeongchang, 180 kilometres (110 miles) east of Seoul, is competing with Annecy in France and Germany's Munich for the 2018 event. The IOC delegation visited Annecy last week and will travel on to Munich before announcing the host on July 6 in the South African city of Durban. About 1,200 residents waved placards and flags with welcoming messages Monday, as a 14-member IOC inspection team led by Gunilla Lindberg of Sweden arrived in Pyeongchang. They will start a four-day inspection from Wednesday. Pyeongchang lost out to Vancouver for the 2010 event and to Russia's Sochi for 2014. South Korea has its eye on a third world sporting event after staging the 1988 Summer Olympics and co-hosting the 2002 World Cup with Japan. It says it is time the winter Games came back to Asia. The continent has hosted the event only twice, both times in Japan -- at Sapporo in 1972 and Nagano in 1998. "It's time for Asia to host the winter Games. Pyeongchang's bid conforms with the Olympic spirit," a senior government official told reporters on condition of anonymity. He said IOC inspectors should consider the tremendous enthusiasm in South Korea for the 2018 event, and an explosion of interest in winter sports across Asia generally. "Open new horizons for the winter Olympics in Asia!" is Pyeongchang's slogan for its third bid. The town is decorated with colourful flags, placards and ribbons expressing the hopes of residents, who will hold concerts and festivals this week to greet the IOC team. "We are well prepared... and united better than before," the official said, citing full support from President Lee Myung-Bak who will visit the resort Tuesday to welcome the IOC team. South Korean sports officials concede that winning the IOC vote will not be easy but Pyeongchang remains confident. It has worked to overcome weakness in catering, logistics, transportation and accommodation. New highways were built and the government plans to upgrade railroads and other infrastructure if Pyeongchang wins. The province has invested more than $1.5 billion to build new facilities including Alpensia, the main venue with ski slopes, hotels, restaurants, golf courses and a convention centre. Alpensia will host events such as the ski jump, cross country and biathlon, while the nearby city of Gangneung will be home to skating and hockey. Seven out of the 13 necessary sites are already in place with all venues accessible by bus within 30 minutes of each other.
