Rico Ramos landed a Hail Mary left hook to knock out Akifumi Shimoda and win the WBA Super Bantamweight title after losing virtually every round up until that point. In the main event, Paul Williams won a controversial majority decision after turning in a less-than-impressive performance against Erislandy Lara. Lara appeared to hurt Williams in each of the first three rounds, as Williams was unable to match Lara’s speed or aggression early in the fight. A right hand in the first stunned Williams, as did a counter left in the second. Lara dominated the third with a swarming attack. Williams worked his way into the fight with a body attack, but a clash of heads opened a cut by Williams’ eye in the fifth. Williams’ body work opened up Lara for power shots, but he appeared to tire in the second half of the fight. Williams was outworked as the fight neared the end and suffered a bloody nose and mouth from Lara’s attack. Despite being four inches shorter, Lara was able to jab and keep Williams at a distance. He hurt Williams with lefts in the tenth and eleventh. After scoring the fight even for the first six rounds, AHN’s unofficial scorecard had Lara winning every round for the second half of the fight and a 117-111 advantage. The judges disagreed in a big way. Al Bennett scored the bout a 114-114 draw. He was overruled by Hilton Whitaker, who had it 115-114, and Don Givens, who scored it 116-114, both in Williams’ favor. CompuBox had Lara landing more punches than Williams, 224-200, and more power shots, 178-161. The judges appeared to reward Williams’ punch volume, as he outthrew Lara by a nearly two to one margin despite landing at a very low rate of accuracy. Williams improved to 40-2 and rebounded from a brutal knockout at the hands of Sergio Martinez in November. In his last three wins, Williams has had two majority decisions and an injury shortened four-round split decision. Lara lost for the first time in his career, dropping to 15-1-1. Rico Ramos stole the show on the undercard with one punch wiping out nearly seven rounds of domination by Akifumi Shimoda. Shimoda, the WBA Super Bantamweight champion, was cruising to victory. He outworked and outlanded Ramos, who looked not-ready for primetime in his first career title fight. Shimoda outlanded Ramos 105 to 80 and out threw him 424 to 273. Even more lopsided was Shimoda’s advantage on the scorecards. Through six rounds, one judge had it 60-54 Shimoda, matching AHN’s unofficial scorecard. The other two judges scored it 59-55 for Shimoda. With one punch, Ramos rendered all the numbers moot. He landed a huge left hook late in the seventh that knocked Shimoda down. He was unable to beat the count, ending the bout and crowning Ramos the new champion. Ramos set up the shot with a left-right combination that slowed Shimoda. The shocking end came at 3:46 of the seventh. “I got cut and had to go for it before they stopped it,” Ramos said of his rally. “I don’t like to get hit, but I had to go for that championship. I got angry, and I decided I had to get this win. “I didn’t think the hook was going to land,” Ramos said when asked if he was surprised by the winning shot. “I felt like he got tired, and I could hear him breathing.” Ramos recorded his eleventh knockout and remained unbeaten at 20-0.
