Israeli police evict Hebron settlers
AFP - Friday, December 5
HEBRON, West Bank (AFP) - - Israeli police were evicting settlers on Thursday from a disputed house in the flashpoint West Bank city of Hebron, following several days of violent clashes.
At one stage a stun grenade went off and shots were fired in the air as furious young settlers hurled rocks at a neighbouring Palestinian home.
More than 100 officers, including members of an elite squad, moved into the controversial building to enforce an eviction order.
About half the estimated 200 people inside the four-storey building left shortly after the police arrived, while officers were seen carrying or shoving others out of the front door.
The action came just hours after the failure of talks between Defence Minister Ehud Barak and settler representatives aimed at defusing a violent stand-off.
Last month, the Israeli High Court ordered the 100 or so Jewish residents to leave the house they claim they bought legally from a Palestinian who denies selling it.
