Daniel Gatti conducts La Scala premiere
By COLLEEN BARRY,Associated Press Writer AP - Thursday, December 4
MILAN, Italy - Conductor Daniele Gatti grew up in Milan soaking up world-class musical performances from La Scala's uppermost balconies. So conducting Verdi's "Don Carlo" for the gala season premiere Sunday night at his hometown opera house is nothing less than a dream.
"Let's hope it remains a dream and not a nightmare," Gatti quipped to reporters on Wednesday.
"Don Carlo" will be the first La Scala premiere for the 47-year-old Gatti, who has been music director of the Royal Philharmonic since 1996 and also succeeds Kurt Masur as the musical director of the Orchestre National de France during the 2008-09 season.
"It is very difficult to talk about these emotions, which are very personal," Gatti said. "I was born in this city, I studied many years at the conservatory, but more than anything I had the opportunity to listen to come to La Scala almost every evening to hear performances."
Labor tensions threatened this year's premiere when some members of the orchestra and choir threatened to strike opening night. A compromise reached Monday saved the gala _ one of Europe's most highly anticipated cultural events, attended by the cream of Milanese society, captains of Italian industry and heads of state and government.
Gatti said the dispute never spilled over into rehearsals.
"There has been complete tranquility in the last two weeks of rehearsal. I had the full participation of all of the artists," Gatti said.
Some orchestra and choir members had refused to ratify a contract approved earlier this year by 90 percent of La Scala's permanent workforce largely over a dispute over their cut of recording rights. La Scala spokesman Carlo Maria Cella said management agreed to additional payments for any recordings beyond two a season.
"Don Carlo" is being staged by French director Stephane Braunschweig. American mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick is singing the role of Princess Eboli, soprano Fiorenza Cedolins will appear as Elisabetta while tenor Giuseppe Filianoti is singing the title role of Don Carlo.
In a departure from previous seasons, "Don Carlo" will be performed on Thursday for an audience of people younger than 25 ahead of the gala premiere.
Besides being transmitted on Italian state television and radio, the Sunday night performance of "Don Carlo" will also be broadcast live on German radio Bayerischer Rundfunk, the German-French co-produced Arte television channel as well as at selected movie theaters in Italy, the Auditorium of the Louvre in Paris and at the Miller Theater at Columbia University in New York City.
