ADVERTISEMENT Strongly supported by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, an avid tobacco hater, the smoking ban came into effect at midnight as ashtrays were removed from tables inside these establishments and smokers stepped outside for a puff. "The saying 'smoke like a turk' is now a thing of the past," said the liberal Radikal daily on its front page, likening the ban to a "revolution" in a country where people could smoke even on buses 15 years ago. The popular Aksam daily said simply "The End", next to a picture of a smoker blowing away a plume of smoke. Sunday's measure is an extension to a May 2008 ban on smoking in workplaces and indoor public spaces that Health Minister Recep Akdag says has reduced smoking rates by seven percent since its introduction. Official statistics say almost one in three adults smoke in Turkey -- a rate that reaches 48 percent among men -- putting the country in 10th place in tobacco consumption in the world. Recent surveys suggest that there is widespread public support for the smoking ban. A survey carried out by Quirk Global Strategies last month among 600 people projected that 95 percent of Turks are behind the ban. However, bar and cafe owners have long protested that they will lose business at the time of a bruising economic crisis as smokers stay away. Their calls for permission to set up separate smoking sections on their premises and a delay in the implementation of the ban have been rejected by the government. "There is no reason for (cafe and bar owners) to be worried.... The only ones to suffer will be the cigarette producers and sellers," Akdag said earlier this week. An association of coffee-house owners, nonetheless, said they were mulling a legal appeal against the ban. "Ninety-five percent of those who come to coffee-houses smoke. The ban means that people will no longer come to these establishment; forcing them to close up one by one. Many will be left unemployed," Huseyin Menekse, from the association's executive board, told the Anatolia news agency. Bars in the Sakarya district of the capital Ankara, meanwhile, sported posters that read "We are against smoking and the smoking ban". Despite the government's zealous effort to stamp out a deadly habit, many doubt that the anti-smoking measure will be applied uniformly throughout the country. While bars and cafes in cities will face regular inspection, many believe it will be difficult to enforce the ban in traditional coffee-houses in rural areas, where men while away their time drinking tea and smoking. Under the ban, owners of bars and restaurants are supposed to first warn a customer who insists on lighting up, then refuse to serve him and finally call the police if all else fails. Non-compliance with the ban will result in a fine of 69 liras (45 dollars, 32 euros) for smokers while the establishment itself will have to pay 560 liras for a first-time offence and up to 5,600 liras for repeat offences. Local authorities have drafted in some 5,000 inspectors to check on premises and make sure that the ban is implemented. Smoking-related illnesses are responsible for nearly 100,000 deaths a year, according to the Turkish Temperance Society.
