The suspect was also shot by one of the officers, who was able to return fire after being hit. The incident began Saturday morning when the first officer responded to the home of the shooter's girlfriend, who had a restraining order against the man. The woman told police that the man forced his way into her home and fired a round from a 9 mm pistol. The responding officer talked to the boyfriend over the phone. He came back to the house, and when the officer approached his car, the man fired, striking the officer in the buttocks. The officer was able to get into his patrol car and chase the man. The other officer, who was backing up his colleague, spotted the suspect's car parked about three blocks away. The suspect surprised him at the driver's side of the patrol car and fired into the car, hitting the officer in the chest, abdomen and arm. The officer, who was wearing a bullet-proof vest, returned fire and hit the man in the thigh and the arm. The suspect received surgery and is expected to survive. The first officer shot was treated and released from the hospital on Saturday, police spokesman Don Moses told reporters. The Baltimore Sun reports that the first officer shot is 42 years old and a three-year veteran on the force. The backup officer is 44 years old, and has been on the department for 17 years. The suspect is 34 years old. None of the men were identified by police.
