According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, make sure the milk you have got is low fat. Not enough children and teens are drinking low fat milk, the CDC reports. The center maintains that while drinking milk is important for children's bone health, and kids need the calcium, vitamin D and other nutrients found in milk, children 2 and older should consume low fat milk. They don't need the extra fat and calories found in regular milk. The findings from the CDC were published in a report called Low-fat Milk Consumption Among Children and Adolescents in the United States. Noted in the study is that about 73 percent of children and teens drink milk, but only about 20 percent drink low fat, skim, or 1 percent milk. In a 2007-2008 survey from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 45 percent of kids and teens said they drank 2 percent milk, and another 32 percent reported they regularly drank whole milk. The push for kids to drink more low fat milk is not new. Recommendations from Dietary Guidelines for Americas 2010 and the American Academy of Pediatrics both call for all children 2 years of age and older to drink low fat milk.
