LOS ANGELES - British actress Julie Andrews, country icon Dolly Parton, jazz drummer Roy Haynes, and punk pioneers the Ramones will receive Grammy Awards for lifetime achievement next year, organizers said on Wednesday. Recipients also include the Juilliard String Quartet, folk revivalists the Kingston Trio, and 101-year-old gospel legend George Beverly Shea.
Michael Jackson album fails to top pop chart
LOS ANGELES - Michael Jackson's first posthumous studio album was the top seller around the world during its first week of release, his label said on Wednesday, but was held to a modest No. 3 debut in the United States. LONDON - The most famous pedestrian crossing in popular music, outside Abbey Road Studios in north London, was designated a site of national importance by the British government on Wednesday. Beatles fans from around the world flock to the road to pose for photographs imitating the picture on the "Abbey Road" album cover which shows Paul, John, George and Ringo strolling over the crossing.
Live from the jury box, it's Steve Martin!
LOS ANGELES, Dec 22 - Leave it to Steve Martin to turn jury duty into performance art. Tweeting over the last couple of days, Martin has regaled his 380,000-plus followers on Twitter with observations inspired by the legal process unfolding before him. Using his Twitter name @SteveMartinToGo, the comedian, a prospective juror, at 12:10 p.m. Monday tweeted: "REPORT FROM JURY DUTY: defendant looks like a murderer. GUILTY. Waiting for opening remarks." A follower named @luvjack713 warned: "If you're really on jury duty you could get into trouble tweeting from it AND announcing he's guilty!!! Careful Steve!"
Chinese film to star Hollywood's Bale
BEIJING - Zhang Yimou, one of China's best-known directors, and local movie moguls is hoping for an ascendance on the world's silver screens to match the country's rise on the global political and economic stage. Winning that international audience may mean tying a Chinese story to a Hollywood face.
Jennifer Hudson "Feeling Good" about weight loss
LOS ANGELES - She won't say how much weight she lost, but singer/actress Jennifer Hudson will say that in the nine months she's been a spokeswoman for Weight Watchers, she has never felt better. Hudson is even singing about it in a new tune, "Feeling Good," which is part of an ad campaign the dieting firm is launching on December 26 to coincide with its new nutritional PointsPlus program.
Robert Gates is Man of Year at MTV college network
LOS ANGELES - You know the 1960s are a long time ago when a TV network targeting college students names the civilian head of the military as its Man of the Year, but that's exactly what mtvU did on Wednesday. The 24-hour offshoot of the MTV lifestyle cable network has picked Defense Secretary Robert Gates as its inaugural Man of the Year. A committee of mtvU staff also named Nicki Minaj, a rookie rapper with fluorescent hair, as Woman of the Year.
"Avatar" the most pirated film of 2010
NEW YORK - Drumroll please ... "Avatar" is the most pirated film of the year, according to data released by a file-sharing blog. That represents a 33% increase in download activity from last year's top-pirated film, "Star Trek," which was downloaded just under 11 million times.
Gwyneth Paltrow finds "Country Strong" a struggle
LOS ANGELES - There is nothing easy about overcoming an addiction and for Gwyneth Paltrow, who plays an addict in her new movie "Country Strong," it was a battle simply to comprehend why people abuse drugs and alcohol. "Country Strong" debuts on Wednesday with Paltrow, an Oscar winner in romantic comedy "Shakespeare in Love," playing singer Kelly Canter. The actress strums the guitar and belts out tunes with ease, yet, getting her head around Kelly's drinking and drug use was among her most difficult work as an actress.
