MARKET SNAPSHOTS * The Pakistani rupee fell to a new low on Friday for the fifth consecutive day because of high demand for dollars to pay for imports and dealers said it was likely to cross 85 in the ready market this week. The rupee <PKR=> was quoted closing at 84.95/85.02 to the dollar compared with Thursday's close of 84.79/85. One currency dealer in Karachi said the rupee had traded as low as 84.90 on Friday. In the one-day forward market, dealers said it traded at 85.07 to the dollar. [PKR/] * The Karachi Stock Exchange's benchmark 100-share index <.KSE> ended 38.74 points, or 0.40 percent, up at 9,776.21 on turnover of 153.94 million shares. [.KA] * The net inflow of foreign investment in the stock market was $2.84 million on Friday. [http://www.nccpl.com.pk/fipi-new/index.php] * U.S. stocks rose on Friday after trading in the red most of the day as investors concluded weak December jobs data wouldn't interrupt a trend of steady economic recovery. The S&P 500 and the Dow hit new 15-month highs while the Nasdaq climbed to its highest level in 16 months. Friday closed a strong week for U.S. stocks with the S&P climbing all five sessions. The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> rose 11.33 points, or 0.11 percent, to end at 10,618.19. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> climbed 3.29 points, or 0.29 percent, to 1,144.98. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> added 17.12 points, or 0.74 percent, to 2,317.17. [.N] * Oil prices bounced over 1 percent and topped $83 a barrel on Monday thanks to a hobbled U.S. dollar and weekend data that showed China's crude oil imports surging by over 25 percent to more than 20 million tonnes in December. U.S crude for February delivery <CLc1> rose 60 cents to $83.35 a barrel by 0225 GMT, after having risen earlier by 1.1 percent. The contract settled up 9 cents at $82.75 a barrel on Friday. [O/R] * Cash gold and New York bullion futures jumped to their highest level in more than a month on Monday after data showed a sharp rise in China's commodity imports and the dollar dropped against other currencies. Trading was thin with the absence of Japanese speculators. Spot gold <XAU=> was quoted at $1,153.80 an ounce by 0031 GMT, up $15.90 an ounce from New York's notional close on Friday. It had risen as high as $1,157.05 an ounce, its strongest level since Dec. 8.
