Are pico projectors the next big cellphone trend?
LAS VEGAS - Large flat-screen TVs were all the rage at the Consumer Electronics Show, but companies like Microvision Inc <MVIS.O> are putting their bets on image viewing of a much smaller scale: projections from devices as tiny as cellphones. While commercial products with so-called pico projectors are still relatively rare, Microvision and rivals such as Texas Instruments Inc <TXN.N> and 3M Co <MMM.N> were promising strong prospects for pico at the Las Vegas show which ends on Sunday.
Japan tech needs M&A but patent war more likely
LAS VEGAS - Japanese schoolchildren often hold hanseikai, or "reflection talks," to discuss what they did wrong during a play or a sports meet. There's a lot of that kind of introspection going on among Japanese tech executives at the Consumer Electronics Show this week, where the dominance of Sony Corp <6758.T> and Panasonic Corp <6752.T> seems to be a thing of the past, usurped by South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co Ltd <005930.KS> and LG Electronics Inc <066570.KS>.
Next version of Nexus will be enterprise phone
LAS VEGAS - Google Inc <GOOG.O> executive Andy Rubin said on Friday that the next version of the Nexus One phone, which was made by HTC Corp <2498.TW>, will be for enterprise users and might have a physical keyboard. Such a device could potentially pose a competitive threat to BlackBerry maker Research In Motion <RIM.TO>, which has a strong position in the enterprise cellphone market.

SEOUL backlights.
Twitter hiring workers to turn Tweets into money
SAN FRANCISCO - Twitter, the popular but money-losing microblogging service, is hiring engineers and specialists who can help turn it into a money-maker. The 2-1/2-year-old Internet start-up, whose short text messages or "tweets" have become a global social phenomenon, is building up a team focused on generating revenue with a new range of yet-to-be launched products, judging by job postings on the company's website.
China's online game revenues hits $4 billion
SHANGHAI over the previous year, according to data from research firm iResearch. The top game operators of 2009 by market share were Tencent Holdings <0700.HK>, Shanda Games <GAME.O> and NetEase.com <NTES.O> the Beijing-based company said.
Mexican tycoon Slim's telecom empire loses luster
MEXICO CITY - Mexican icon Carlos Slim may be one of the world's two richest men, but his telecommunications empire is losing some of its shine. Technology, regulation and growing competitors are chipping away at Telmex, the cornerstone of Slim's telecommunications holdings, and once-frantic sales growth at his America Movil wireless operator is tapering off.
Apple tablet supply chain points to Q2 launch: sources
TAIPEI - Suppliers for Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> new tablet computer have begun shipping touchscreen panels and will start delivering aluminum casings for it next month, sources said, implying a second-quarter product launch. AVY Precision Technology Inc <5392.TWO>, a Taiwanese manufacturer of covers for electronic products, will begin production of the cases in February, two sources familiar with the situation said on Friday.
Palm shares jump on CES, 2010 seen turnaround year
NEW YORK - Palm Inc <PALM.O> shares jumped 10 percent on Friday after the company announced it will sell smartphones through top U.S. mobile carrier, Verizon Wireless, a deal that analysts said could mark the beginning of a turnaround for the handset maker. The step toward wider distribution, announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, was not surprising, but analysts said it was still good news.
E-reader makers seek bestseller but may end up duds
LAS VEGAS - Remember the Dell DJ MP3 player? Or Sony's Clie digital assistant? It's likely dozens of the electronic readers debuting at the Consumer Electronics Show may go the way of these defunct gadgets by next year. Amazon.com Inc's <AMZN.O> Kindle popularized digital readers and galvanized a market estimated at a few million devices annually, with everyone from Barnes & Noble Inc <BKS.N> to Google Inc <GOOG.O> playing a role.
