1 dead, 4 missing as Typhoon Morakot slams Taiwan

 AFP - Saturday, August 8
TAIPEI (AFP) - - One person was killed and four were missing in Taiwan as Typhoon Morakot lashed the island with powerful winds and downpours, rescuers said on Saturday.

A woman in southern Kaohsiung died after she fell into a ditch when strong winds swept her off her motorcycle while four fishermen are unaccounted for, said the National Fire Agency, which coordinates rescue work.
Fourteen people have been injured but none of those hurt in typhoon-related incidents is seriously wounded, the agency said.
Morakot made landfall around midnight in eastern Hualien county, unleashing powerful winds that swayed high-rise buildings, turned over cars and uprooted trees and road signs in many places.
Television footage showed that winds ripped the iron roof off an elementary school in central Changhua county.
Morakot, which means "emerald" in Thai, had dumped 1,255 millimetres (49 inches) of rain on southern Pingtung county as of early Saturday and caused flooding in 100 locations, the agency said.
Taiwan's financial markets, offices and summer schools were shut and most outdoor festivities postponed on Friday while nearly 400 domestic and international flights were cancelled, the authorities said.
According to Taiwan's weather bureau, the typhoon was 50 kilometres (31 miles) northeast of Hualien at 05:30 am (2130 GMT Friday), moving west-northwest at 10 kilometres per hour and packing gusts of 126 kilometres per hour.
The bureau said the typhoon was losing strength and was expected to hit China later Saturday, the bureau said.
Taiwan is typically hit by a dozen or so typhoons in the summer which help to replenish its water supply. The authorities said Morakot had already brought 270 million tons of water to reservoirs island-wide to help avert an imminent drought.
