US-ENTERTAINMENT Summary
Reuters - Saturday, August 8
"Mad Men" still spellbinding
ADVERTISEMENT
LOS ANGELES - Even with all the loose ends left dangling in the finale last year, is there a "Mad Men" fan in God's creation that actually believes the show's Season 3 premiere on AMC Sunday is going to tie each and every one of them up in pretty bows? As two seasons of "Mad Men" are enough to indicate, that is not series creator Matthew Weiner's way. The "Sopranos" alumnus graduated from the David Chase School of Storytelling. You not only don't give the viewers what they want, you confound them by toying with their expectations. Maybe you even make them question those expectations in the first place. Want tidy resolutions to cliffhangers? Go watch "Desperate Housewives."
Michael Douglas' son could get life in prison
NEW YORK - The son of actor Oscar-winning actor Michael Douglas could face life in prison for selling large amounts of an illegal drug over a three-year period before his arrest late last month, court records show. Cameron Douglas, 30, a sometimes actor who appeared with his father and grandfather Kirk Douglas in "It Runs in the Family," is accused of selling tens of thousands of dollars worth of methamphetamine, according to a complaint unsealed this week.
"G.I. Joe" should be court-martialed
NEW YORK - The latest action franchise seemingly designed to further spread the incidence of ADD among youth the world over, "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" plays like a sequel to a film that was never made. Opening Friday without being screened in advance for critics -- probably a wise move because most of them have a mental age of over 10 -- the Paramount release film should achieve its main goal of provoking sales of the venerable Hasbro toys upon which it's based.
Dance queen Lady GaGa fashions booming career
NEW YORK - Sprawled on her bed in an Amsterdam hotel, Lady GaGa is channeling Lady Godiva-sans the horse. While the 23-year-old has famously worn everything from Kermit the Frog to a hat made to resemble the solar system, today she's rocking the one constant in her ever shifting wardrobe-underpants. And nothing more.
Rihanna, Kanye and Jay-Z to open new Jay Leno show
LOS ANGELES - R&B stars Rihanna, Kanye West and Jay-Z will perform on the premiere of Jay Leno's comedy and chat show in September, in a apparent bid to grab hip, young viewers to NBC's new primetime experiment. NBC said on Thursday that the trio would perform "Run This Town" from Jay-Z's new album, "The Blueprint 3," when "The Jay Leno Show" makes its debut on September 14 at 10pm.
Madonna cancels Slovenia gig, media cite sales
LJUBLJANA - Pop star Madonna has canceled her concert in Ljubljana, Slovenia scheduled for August 20, the tour manager said on Friday. Local media cited poor ticket sales as the main factor, although promoters denied this was the reason.
Live metal thrives with Mayhem, Metallica tours
NASHVILLE - Judging from the upcoming touring schedule, death metal is, er, alive and well. So are other subgenres of hard rock that still inspire passion from fans. Because traditional windows of exposure like radio and TV are seldom open to them, metal bands have to tour to build followings.
"Brat Pack" director John Hughes dies of heart attack
LOS ANGELES - Filmmaker John Hughes, who made some of the most memorable teen comedies of the 1980s and turned Macaulay Culkin into a major star, died suddenly of a heart attack in New York on Thursday. He was 59. Hughes, who had largely turned his back on Hollywood in the past decade to become a farmer in the Midwestern state of Illinois, collapsed while strolling in Manhattan, where he was visiting family.
Posh Spice, Katy Perry to fill in on "Idol"
LOS ANGELES - Pop singers Katy Perry, former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, and other female artists will be guest judges on "American Idol" this upcoming season to help replace departing Paula Abdul, Fox television executives said on Thursday. But Fox and the producers of the most-watched American television show said they are searching for a permanent, fourth judge to sit in Abdul's seat when the ninth season of the show returns to TV in early 2010.
Taiwan's Jay Chou cast as Kato in "Green Hornet"
LOS ANGELES - It's a role that introduced U.S. audiences to Bruce Lee, and now Taiwanese singer and actor Jay Chou will play martial arts master Kato in an upcoming movie version of "The Green Hornet," a studio said on Friday. Kato is the sidekick to the Green Hornet, a vigilante crime fighter played by comedian Seth Rogen in the upcoming movie from Columbia Pictures, slated for a summer 2010 release.
