ADVERTISEMENT Chen, who has been in custody since December on corruption and other charges, raised the idea during a meeting with a scholar who has long devoted himself to the island's independence. "He felt that we should found a party called Taiwan Independence Party," professor Tsai Ting-kui of the National Taiwan University said. "He said Taiwan must not be linked to China and should stop using the title of the Republic of China (Taiwan's official title), which he insists would arrest Taiwan's progress." The party should centre its work on the promotion of independence, while the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) which Chen once led should seek power through elections, Chen said, according to Tsai. The proposal, however, received a lukewarm reaction from the DPP. "Just look at the harm he has caused to the DPP and Taiwan. The proposal should be ignored," former DPP legislator Lin Cho-shui said. The former president, 59, quit the DPP in August last year after money laundering allegations against him and his family surfaced. Chen has admitted that his wife Wu Shu-chen wired 20 million US dollars abroad from his past campaign funds, but insists that she did so without his knowledge. Chen, who is due to appear in court for a pre-trial hearing Tuesday, is also accused of embezzlement, taking bribes, influence peddling and extortion; he denies all charges. He faces life in prison if convicted on all counts. The ex-leader has repeatedly said the allegations are part of a political witch-hunt by the China-friendly Kuomintang government, launched in revenge for the way he irked the mainland with his pro-independence rhetoric while he was in office. Some legal experts have expressed concern about the handling of the case, including the decision to detain Chen ahead of his trial and to change the presiding judge. A total of 14 people have been charged, 11 of whom have admitted a variety of offences, including Wu and the Chens' son and daughter-in-law, who have pleaded guilty to money laundering.
