The judge at Bangkok's Criminal Court complained about the defense's continued failure to produce witnesses. "Looking at the list of witnesses, we shouldn't use up all this much time. It looks inappropriate," the judge said. Bout, dubbed the "Merchant of Death" by the media, was arrested in Bangkok in an American sting operation after arriving from Moscow in March last year. One of Bout's lawyers argued on Monday that his client had been illegally detained by Thai and American officials. He was the only person to speak before the judge adjourned the case, saying the next two hearings would be on March 17 and 18, after which he may set a date for his verdict. As at his previous appearance, Bout came to court in orange prison garb, handcuffed and his ankles shackled. The United States wants him to stand trial for conspiracy to sell arms to the FARC rebels in Colombia. U.S. authorities say the weapons could be used to kill Americans in Colombia. Bout says he is innocent and that the United States has offered no proof linking him to weapons sales to Colombian rebels. U.S. authorities allege Bout has been trafficking arms since the 1990s, using a fleet of cargo planes to send weapons to Africa, South America and the Middle East. At a court appearance in December, Bout said he was merely a businessman involved in aviation. According to the United Nations and the U.S. Treasury, Bout has sold or brokered arms that have helped fuel wars in Afghanistan, Angola, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Sudan.
