ADVERTISEMENT The piece, created in 2003 but performed for the first time in Austria, drew standing ovations as much for the Hamburg Ballet's lead dancer Lloyd Riggins, who convincingly portrayed Gustav von Aschenbach -- the troubled choreographer in search of a masterpiece -- as for ballet director Neumeier himself. Where Thomas Mann's novel revolved around a writer struggling with his prose, Neumeier transposed a choreographer, striving to create his own ballet but unable to let loose his ideas. The result is an increasingly complex, unnatural and forced choreography -- intentionally so, notes Neumeier -- juxtaposed with the joy and liveliness of the young boy that Aschenbach falls in love with during a stay at the beach. More than recreating Mann's work, Neumeier says he tried to render the novel's "mythical element." "I must forget what's in the text and try first to build a scene that has tension. Then I can say if it corresponds to something in the novel," he adds. "Death in Venice" is essentially a series a tableaux, mixing ballet and contemporary dance and depicting the choreographer's imagination and dreams, to contrasting music by Richard Wagner and Johann Sebastian Bach. Only a scene featuring neo-classical metal and two dancers in masks recalling hard rock band Kiss, waving electric guitars -- meant to depict the choreographer's search for his youth -- jars with the whole and falls flat.
