Sara Feigenholtz as early voting continued in Illinois' 5th congressional district for the U.S. House seat vacated by White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel. Hynes on Sunday endorsed Feigenholtz, one of 12 Democrats vying for the seat. He said in a statement, "Sara has consistently rejected political gamesmanship in Springfield in order to get things done for people and her passion for health care will make her a great partner for President Obama in Congress to help all Americans get the health care they deserve." Feigenholtz, 52, is in a heated race with state Rep. John Fritchey and Cook County Board Commissioner Mike Quigley. Fritchey, who previously served as state assistant attorney general, has the backing of the Illinois AFL-CIO while Quigley, an environmentalist, has endorsements from the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times. The 5th district is predominantly Democratic and includes Chicago's North Side. Early voting began last Monday and will be held through Thursday. A primary has been set for March 3 ahead of a special election on April 7. Five Greens and six Republicans are also in contention for the seat, including Tom Hanson, who is campaigning as a "liberal Republican," and 49-year-old attorney Greg Bedell, who has the endorsement of Cook County Commissioner Tony Peraica. Emanuel resigned his seat in Congress last month to serve as President Barack Obama's top aide. He previously served as House Democratic Caucus chair and headed the finance committee of the presidential campaign of Bill Clinton. He was also former President Bill Clinton's senior adviser at the White House, and was chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee from 2005 to 2007.
