(AHN) - President Barack Obama welcomed the nation's governors over the weekend, hosting the 2009 Governors' Dinner even as some have announced that they will refuse their share of the administration's $787 billion economic stimulus. The President and First Lady Michelle Obama welcomed the National Governors Association (NGA) led by its chair, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, on Sunday at the White House. The black-tie event was held as the NGA was in the middle of its Winter Meeting, where the economy and local budgets were the focal concern. The President delivered remarks before the formal dinner, which was also attended by Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden. "I say it often, but I'm going to repeat it tonight, that nobody understands what's happening in the country, and the struggles, hopes hardships and the dreams of the American people as well as the nation's governors," Obama said, according to a pool report. The same day, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal re-iterated on NBC's "Meet the Press" that he would refuse to take the $100 million for federal unemployment assistance for his state. "The best thing that Washington could do to help Louisiana and all of our states with our budgets is to get this economy moving again," Jindal said. "I don't think the best way to do that is for the government to tax and borrow more money... The $100 million we turned down was temporary federal dollars that would require us to change our unemployment laws. That would've actually raised taxes on Louisiana businesses. We as a state would've been responsible for paying for those benefits after the federal money disappeared." Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, another a Republican, has also expressed concerns about the unemployment benefits. He had made clear earlier this month as the president's stimulus was under contentious debate in Congress, "The legislation currently being considered includes excess spending and impedes states' abilities to manage their own programs. I will oppose any stimulus package that increases states' costs and taxes, or results in federal control over state-administered programs." Obama signed his recovery plan into law last Tuesday amid continued Republican criticisms about the lack of bipartisanship in the way the measure was passed, and wasteful provisions that were not "timely, temporary nor targeted." He followed up the legislation with a $75 billion plan to stem foreclosures that also elicited concerns from the GOP. The formal dinner with the nation's governors was the first such event for the President since assuming office. The First Lady had invited students from the L'Academie de Cuisine in Gaithersburg, Maryland to learn about preparing the menu for the black-tie event.
