Hundreds of bikes in Cologne, Germany. A new club of German Jewish motorcyclists calling themselves the Hillel's Angels launched a cross-country tour with other bikers Friday in honour of the national unification day, organisers said.
BERLIN (AFP) - – A new club of German Jewish motorcyclists calling themselves the Hillel's Angels launched a cross-country tour with other bikers Friday in honour of the national unification day, organisers said.
The group set off on "an excursion on two wheels" through towns key to 500 years of national history ahead of the 19th anniversary on Saturday of the day West Germany and East Germany became one country again.
The Hillel's Angels Motorcycle Club Germany, which borrows the Hebrew name of several prominent historical figures and modern Jewish groups, and the Eurobiker Club, a group of politically engaged motorcyclists, were cruising from the former West German capital of Bonn to Berlin.
They said in a statement that the Germany Tour was intended to mark "the 20th anniversary of the peaceful revolution and the fall of the Wall in East Germany" as well as a similar tour by MPs and civil servants in 1999, the year the government moved to Berlin.
Participants will stop at the former Nazi concentration camp of Buchenwald, at the site of the candlelight marches in the eastern city of Leipzig that helped bring the Wall down and Wittenberg, where Martin Luther sparked the Protestant Reformation.
The tour will wrap up Berlin's government quarter late Saturday at a popular restaurant specialising in delicacies from the Bonn region.
