LinkedIn plans to raise up to $175 million in IPO

- LinkedIn Corp, whose professional networking site has 90 million users, plans to raise up to $175 million in an initial public offering, according to a regulatory filing. The company, co-founded in 2002 by ex-PayPal executive Reid Hoffman, announced its intention to go public on Thursday, but did not immediately reveal how many shares would be offered or their price range.

Exclusive: The next generation of WikiLeaks

BERLIN - All across Europe, from Brussels to the Balkans, a new generation of WikiLeaks-style websites is sprouting. Like their forerunner, the fledgling whistle-blowing sites are a chaotic mixture of complex systems engineering, earnest campaigning, muckraking and self-promotion.

Wikileaks spin-off group launches new site

DAVOS, Switzerland - A group led by the former deputy to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange launched a new site to aid whistleblowers on the sidelines of the Davos meeting of the global business elite Friday. Daniel Domscheit-Berg, who was Assange's former number two before quitting the Wikileaks project, said the new Openleaks.org site would aim to provide a conduit that made it easier and safer for ordinary people to leak information anonymously to media and into the public domain.

FCC seeks to dismiss challenges to Internet rules

NEW YORK/WASHINGTON - The Federal Communications Commission filed on Friday to dismiss challenges to its new Internet traffic rules, an agency official said. A senior FCC official said the agency filed several motions with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit asking the court to dismiss as premature challenges from Verizon Communications Inc <VZ.N> and MetroPCS Communications Inc <PCS.N>.

Young, web savvy fight for Egypt against Mubarak

CAIRO - They are young, street smart and their pride at being Egyptian trumps any religious loyalty. They have mobilized behind a single aim: the toppling of Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak. "The people demand the fall of the regime!" they chanted in their thousands in Cairo's central Tahrir square for several hours on the "Day of Wrath" that started a wave of protests across the country on Tuesday.

Microsoft's Windows disappoints on lukewarm PC sales

SEATTLE - Sales of Microsoft Corp's <MSFT.O> Windows software fell short of outsized expectations, rekindling fears that the spread of mobile gadgets will erode its main PC-focused business. Microsoft surprised Wall Street with a better-than-expected profit, helped by resurgent corporate spending after the belt-tightening of past years. But its shares stayed flat as investors expressed concern about the weakness of overall computer sales amid a faltering U.S. recovery.

U.S. review of Huawei/3Leaf under way

WASHINGTON is scrutinizing Huawei's deal for server technology firm 3Leaf, which the Chinese telecom gear maker completed in May, for U.S. national security implications.

Tablets won't steamroll Microsoft, top executive says

DAVOS, Switzerland - Concerns that roaring demand for tablets and smartphones like Apple's <AAPL.O> iPad and iPhone will leave Microsoft <MSFT.O> in the dust are simply overdone, Microsoft International's president told Reuters. "Devices are going to go and come," Jean-Philippe Courtois, president of Microsoft International, told Reuters at the World Economic Forum, adding that the company was making progress developing products in the tablet arena.

SanDisk shares dive, hit margin, price fears

SAN FRANCISCO - SanDisk Corp <SNDK.O> shares plunged 10 percent on Friday as worries about falling chip prices and crumbling margins outweighed a better-than- expected quarterly revenue forecast. The stock hit a trough of $46.18 and was down 9.9 percent at $46.24 in afternoon trading after the company reported a fourth-quarter adjusted gross margin of 43.7 percent, compared with Wall Street's estimate of 45.2 percent.

Sliding profit margins drag Amazon shares

BANGALORE - Sliding profit margins at Amazon.com <AMZN.O> prompted mixed reactions from analysts on Friday, a day after it posted quarterly results, though most of them stuck to their top ratings on the world's largest online retailer. The results showed profit margins at the company were sliding, worrying investors and sending its shares down more than 9 percent in midday trade.
