Rail good trip home for CNY

Beijing (The Star/ANN) - It is the time of the year when Chinese workers in large numbers leave the major cities for their hometowns to celebrate the Spring Festival or Chinese Lunar New Year, the majority going home by road, and a sizeable number taking the train or flying.
Every year, the railway and road authorities will add more trains and buses to meet the ever increasing demand by filial sons and daughters to get home in time to celebrate the festival with their elders.
Zhao Feifei, who works in Shanghai, will travel back to Fu'an in Fujian province together with most of the people today. The peak period of the exodus is today and tomorrow.
"In the past, I took the bus and the travelling time would be seven hours. But this time I am taking the high-speed train, which shortens the journey to less than six hours," he said.
"I did not face any problem buying my train ticket. I believe it was harder for those bound for inland destinations such as Anhui, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei and Sichuan provincess."
People from those areas, known as migrant workers, travel back by train, while those from coastal areas like Fujian, Guangdong, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces are usually businessmen who have their own transport.
Fu Changbiao, manager of a road construction company in Beijing, said he and most of his staff would return to Chengde in Hebei province, about three hours' drive from the Chinese capital.
"We go back only once a year. Northern Chinese treat the lunar new year as a major festival. Our hometown is quite near Beijing, so that makes it easier for us. We will spend about 10 days with our families and return to Beijing after the festival," he said.
Vivian He, who works at a headhunting firm, said she would not visit her parents in Sanmenxia in Henan province this new year.
"I would rather visit my parents some other time," she said.
"Half of the population will go back to their hometowns. I prefer to avoid the hassle and crowd. Beijing will be quiet during Chinese New Year."
This year, the exodus to and fro will last for 40 days from Jan 19 until Feb 27. Over the past week, railway stations and bus terminals nationwide have seen a surge in the number of passengers.
Railway authorities transported 25.38 million people in the first five days of the exodus, a 18.5% increase over the corresponding period last year. More than 5.17 million passengers, a 17.5% jump, had returned home using road transport.
Those travelling are praying that their journey will not be marred by a disaster as what happened in 2008 when unprecedented heavy snow and icy rain crippled traffic in southern China.
If everything goes smoothly, a record 2.6 billion people will have returned by road during the exodus, while railway stations would probably record some 230 million commuters.
At a press conference, Chinese Transport Ministry spokesman He Jianzhong noted that many roads in the southern provinces of Guizhou, Hunan and Guangxi were severely affected by snowfall early this month.
"According to weather forecasts, the freezing cold weather is likely to continue for a while, like in 2008. So, the emergency plans and precautionary measures we have in place will be tested," he said.
"We understand that all provincial transport departments are already well equipped with machinery and logistics and rescue and relief resources to combat the cold weather."
Deputy Railways Minister Wang Zhiguo told another press conference that China's railway technology, capacity and infrastructure had improved significantly, and hence would be able to handle the exodus better than in previous years.
"We have added more than 15,000km of new railway lines. By the end of last year, China had an operational mileage of 91,000km, with 480 high-speed train units and 8,540 new normal trains added, as well as over 290 new train stations," he said.
Local media reported that many migrant workers in Beijing were hoping to avoid the hassle of taking the train and were making the trip by car instead.
About half of the 108,000 people who registered online at jfhome.com, which matches people with spare seats in their cars with those looking for a ride, will car pool home.
While millions of the city population are already home for the festival, many migrant workers will be working. On Jan 10, the Culture Ministry in collaboration with major state-owned enterprises organised an entertainment show for 3,000 such workers at the Wukesong Indoor Stadium.
"The New Year and Spring Festival are two of the traditional festivals in China," the ministry's community culture department deputy director, Li Hong, said.
"These workers are not able to be with their families during the festivals. We want to give them some cheer."
Beijing Fangshan District Mingren School principal Zhu Baoguo said about half of the 1,300 students at the school would stay back as their parents would have to work.
"I will not be going back to Hebei. There is a lot of work waiting for me during the week-long holiday. I have not gone home for Spring Festival since the school was opened," said Zhu, who founded the school for migrant workers 13 years ago.
