Sony takes on DS and smartphones with new handheld
TOKYO - Sony Corp <6758.T> unveiled a new handheld gaming device and announced it would make PlayStation games available on other makers' hardware, as it battles with Nintendo's <7974.OS> DS and tries to fend off competition from Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPhone. The announcement to an audience of hundreds packing the ballroom of a Tokyo hotel came the same day as Nintendo, which is readying the launch of a 3D version of its DS handheld next month, reported a 46 percent slide in quarterly profit, below analysts' estimates.
Microsoft set to report lower profit on stale PC growth
SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> is set to report a dip in earnings on Thursday, a year after the launch of its Windows 7 operating system blew away Wall Street estimates, as sales of personal computers lag expectations and Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPad eats away at the fringes of its core market. The world's largest software maker, which powers more than 90 percent of the world's computers, is still a money-making machine, but its fortunes are tied to vulnerable PC sales and investors have doubts it can replicate its dominance in the fast-growing mobile and tablet markets.
Nintendo Q3 profit down 46 percent, keeps outlook
TOKYO - Nintendo Co Ltd <7974.OS> reported a 46 percent fall in quarterly profit, as sales of its aging DS handheld device tumbled ahead of the launch of a new, 3D-capable model next month. The news came the same day Sony Corp <6758.T> unveiled a rival portable gaming device set to hit the market around the end of the year. Both firms need a new hit product to help them compete against Apple's <AAPL.O> iPhone and the growing ranks of rival smartphones.
AT&T shares fall on disappointing results
NEW YORK - AT&T Inc <T.N> posted revenue that missed estimates and it added fewer wireless subscribers than expected in its final quarter as exclusive U.S. provider for the Apple Inc <AAPL.O> iPhone, Its shares fell 3 percent as some investors were also disappointed by the company's 2011 expectation for earnings per share growth in the mid-single-digit percentage range, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Christopher Larsen.
Special report: Can Samsung change with the tech times?
SEOUL - Only a handful of reporters were at Samsung's booth at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this month when Jay Y. Lee dropped by. They had been tipped that the sheltered heir to the Samsung business empire was about to make his first public appearance since his father named him one of the new presidents of the conglomerate's flagship, Samsung Electronics <005930.KS>, in December.
RIM says no access to corporate email in India
NEW DELHI - BlackBerry maker Research In Motion <RIM.TO> on Thursday said there was no possibility of providing India access to corporate emails on BlackBerry devices. India has demanded access to all BlackBerry services as part of efforts to fight militancy and security threats over the Internet and through telephone communications.
Nokia warns of weak start to 2011 as profit slips
HELSINKI - Nokia <NOK1V.HE>, the world's top cellphone maker by volume, warned of a weak start to 2011 after its market share shrank again in the fourth quarter, sending its shares sharply lower. Stephen Elop, who took over as chief executive last September, said the company faced significant challenges in its competitiveness and execution.
Lenovo and NEC may work on smartphone development
TOKYO - Lenovo <0992.HK>, the world's No.4 PC brand, may team up with Japan's NEC Corp <6701.T> to jointly develop smartphones in the future, the chief executive of the Chinese company said on Thursday. Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing did not give further details during a news conference to announce the company's joint venture with NEC to sell PCs in Japan.
Motorola smartphones disappoint, iPhone already weighs
NEW YORK - Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc <MMI.N> is already feeling pressure from the next Apple Inc <AAPL.O> iPhone and forecast a steeper than usual drop in sales this quarter as a result, sending its shares down 6.8 percent. In the roughly two weeks since Motorola's biggest customer Verizon Wireless unveiled plans to start selling an iPhone in February, Motorola has already noticed a decline in smartphone sales, Chief Executive Sanjay Jha said on Wednesday.
Verizon struggles with BlackBerry data traffic
TORONTO - Some Verizon Wireless <VZ.N> customers using BlackBerrys have been limited to making voice calls on Research In Motion's <RIM.TO> smartphone for as long as a week, but Verizon said on Wednesday the issue was fully resolved. Contributors to a BlackBerry support forum said they had trouble connecting to the Internet, using Internet-based apps and had delayed email delivery since last Tuesday.
