They might be getting messages you didn't realize you were sending. Playwright Dan LeFranc has done quite a lot of careful listening to parent-child communications, judging by the spot-on dialogue he's written for a father and teenage son in his riveting new play "Sixty Miles to Silver Lake," premiering off-Broadway at Soho Rep. (A co-production between Soho Rep and Page 73 theater company, it's playing through Feb. 8.) All the action takes place between the two, sitting in the front seat of the bitter, divorced father's not-so-new car and sharing multiple weekend trips to the dad's new home. Tightly directed by Anne Kauffman, actors Joseph Adams as the often-overbearing father Ky, and Dane DeHaan as his sensitive son, Denny, both give haunting performances. DeHaan is particularly adept at portraying the same kid at different ages in quicksilver changes. Their physical closeness in the car contrasts sharply with their emotional distance. Although both attempt to discuss what's important to them, they rarely connect and don't always seem to hear what the other is really saying. Adams subtly develops his character, who seems like such a nice guy but conveys bursts of increasingly inappropriate advice and negative impressions to his son. An absent, hardworking father for much of Denny's youth, Ky shares overly rosy memories of the few father-son events he recalls, which Denny is happy to puncture with teenage insouciance. Denny also stands up for his mother, refuting some of Ky's frequent disparaging remarks about her. In a moment of role-reversal typical for this pair, he reminds his father to speak respectfully about women. Tension escalates, with eerie voiceovers hinting at just how much Ky's casually bigoted, misogynistic and occasionally vicious remarks might inform the adult that Denny grows to be. The car itself, designed by Dane Laffrey, is a remarkable vehicle, aided in its own mostly impartial performance by Tyler Micoleau's lighting and Leah Gelpe's sound and projection design. Ky and Denny may share DNA and be traveling side by side in the same vehicle, but they can't seem to bridge the gap on this journey.
