"Benjamin Button," "Slumdog" lead Oscar nominees
LOS ANGELES .
War, immigration, politics mark foreign Oscar picks
LOS ANGELES - Three films with strong political themes were among the Oscar nominees in the foreign language category on Thursday, with the anti-war "Waltz with Bashir" in the running to win Israel's first Oscar. The other films nominated for a foreign language Oscar were France's "The Class," Germany's "The Baader Meinhof Complex," Japan's "Departures" and Austria's "Revanche."
Just a Minute With: Chris Rock on his "Good Hair"
PARK CITY, Utah - Chris Rock makes people laugh with his looks behind U.S. race relations, culture and politics, but he was stumped for an answer when his young daughter Lola asked: "how come I don't have good hair?". So Rock set out to learn, and the result is his film documentary "Good Hair," which takes audiences deep inside the multi-billion dollar business of hair care products. What emerges is an often funny, yet serious take on the culture of black Americans and their hair.
"Milk" screenwriter straddles two clashing worlds
LOS ANGELES - The Oscar-nominated screenwriter of "Milk," about one of America's first openly gay elected officials, says he first heard of Harvey Milk as a closeted gay teenager who grew up a devout Mormon in Texas. By then, about 10 years had passed since Milk, the charismatic San Francisco gay activist and politician, had been shot and killed, but Dustin Lance Black said Milk's story struck him as a personal inspiration.
Hayden Panettiere's dad gets probation for assault
LOS ANGELES - The father of "Heroes" teen star Hayden Panettiere pleaded no contest to assaulting his wife and was sentenced to two years' probation, Los Angeles prosecutors said on Thursday. Alan Panettiere, 49, could have been sentenced to up to one year in jail for the misdemeanor battery charge stemming from an August 2008, assault on his wife, Lesley.
Parents' group protests Britney Spears song
NEW YORK - The Parents Television Council is warning parents about the Britney Spears song "If U Seek Amy" and urging radio stations not to broadcast it because the nonprofit organization believes it "would violate the broadcast indecency law" if aired between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Saying the title phrase quickly out loud produces a sound akin to spelling out the F-word, said PTC president Tim Winter. "There is no misinterpreting the lyrics to this song, and it's certainly not about a girl named Amy," he said of the track, the third single from Spears' new Jive album, "Circus."
Oscar voters fail to make Clint Eastwood's day
LOS ANGELES - Clint Eastwood just made one of the biggest movies of his career, but Oscar voters kicked the tires of "Gran Torino" and drove off in other vehicles. The drama which Eastwood directed, produced and starred in -- as well as co-wrote the theme song -- failed to score a single mention when nominations for the 81st annual Academy Awards were announced on Thursday.
"Twilight" star Stewart rides roller coaster of fame
PARK CITY, UTAH - Vampire romance "Twilight" hurtled Kristen Stewart to the kind of fame that can turn a life into a roller coaster ride, so it seems appropriate that her new movie revolves around an amusement park. "Adventureland," which premiered this week at the Sundance Film Festival, is one of a string of quirky movies Stewart, 18, has starred-in since her first film at age 11.
NY exhibit "On the Money" finds humor in boom, bust
NEW YORK - When the well-heeled patrons of New York's venerable Morgan Library wander through its new exhibition of cartoons about money, there may be some hollow laughter as they ponder their own hard times. The exhibit of 70 years of New Yorker magazine cartoons titled "On the Money" was planned over a year ago, before the full scale of the financial crisis that has plunged the United States and much of the world into recession became apparent.
Ruffalo gets rolling with "Sympathy"
LOS ANGELES in the cast, fell into limbo after the December death of Ruffalo's brother, Scott.
