RIM says Apple claims about BlackBerry unacceptable

TORONTO - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> appears to be deliberately distorting the issues surrounding the iPhone 4's antenna design by asserting that Research In Motion's <RIM.TO><RIMM.O> BlackBerry has similar reception problems, RIM said. "Apple's attempt to draw RIM into Apple's self-made debacle is unacceptable," RIM co-Chief Executives Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie said in a statement emailed late Friday.

Defiant Jobs stands by iPhone 4

CUPERTINO, California - A defiant Steve Jobs on Friday rejected any suggestion the iPhone 4's design was flawed, but offered consumers free phone cases to address reception complaints that have hurt Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> image and shares. At a rare, 90-minute press conference, the Apple chief executive asserted that reception issues were a problem shared by the entire smartphone industry, naming specifically rivals Research in Motion <RIM.TO>, Samsung Electronics <005930.KS> and HTC Corp <2498.TW>.

Smartphones boost Sony Ericsson Q2, sees more growth

STOCKHOLM - Mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson pinned its hopes on further growth in the smartphone segment on Friday as it posted a second consecutive quarterly profit, driven by sales of the more expensive gadgets. Sony Ericsson, owned jointly by Ericsson <ERICb.ST> and Sony Corp <6758.T> and which is the world's fifth-biggest handset maker, has cut costs and revamped its portfolio with more phones such as the Xperia X10 offering PC-like functions and links to social networking sites.

Justin Bieber claims Lady Gaga's YouTube throne

LOS ANGELES - Teen sensation Justin Bieber has knocked Lady Gaga off her reign as holder of the most-viewed video on YouTube. Bieber, 16, who was discovered on YouTube, racked up more than 246 million views of his music video "Baby" on Friday, pushing Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" into second place with 245.6 million.

Investors uneasy as Google costs rise

SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> is pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into new businesses, but Wall Street is nervous about the ultimate payoff. Investors sent Google shares down more than 6 percent on Friday, a day after the Internet search leader reported a surge in expenses during the second quarter that caused it to miss profit estimates.

Electronic Arts exiting France's Ubisoft

PARIS <ERTS.O> is selling out of Ubisoft Entertainment SA <UBIP.PA> six years after buying a big chunk of the world's third-largest independent video games publisher. A Ubisoft spokesman said EA was selling an unspecified stake in the French company. He would not confirm reports EA was selling its entire 14.8 percent stake.

Europe woes and iPhone surge to hit handset vendors

SEOUL/HELSINKI - Top global cellphone makers are set to report a disappointing quarter, hit by euro zone debt problems and the roaring success of smartphone heavyweight Apple, and new launches may determine how they fare in the year's second half. BlackBerry maker Research in Motion <RIM.TO> has already reported disappointing quarterly shipments, rekindling worries it is losing market share to Apple <AAPL.O> and other rivals. Nokia also issued a second profit warning as it struggles to compete against iPhone.

Discovery says infringement case v Amazon not new

WILMINGTON, Delaware - A patent infringement lawsuit filed on Wednesday against Amazon.com was a procedural move and not a new lawsuit, according to Discovery Communications Inc <DISCA.O>, which filed the complaint. Earlier on Thursday, Reuters reported that Discovery Communications filed a lawsuit on Wednesday accusing Amazon.com Inc <AMZN.O> of infringing patents covering electronic book delivery and security with its Kindle e-book reader.

Still plenty of demand for iPad: survey

CHICAGO - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> has already sold more than three million of its iPad tablet computers in just over three months, but there is still more demand out there, a new survey showed on Thursday. While 8.4 percent of the 1,000 people surveyed by America's Research Group said they had already bought an iPad, another 6.1 percent said they planned to buy the device.

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen pledges fortune to philanthropy

NEW YORK - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> co-founder Paul Allen, who has been treated for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, said on Thursday he is committing most of his estimated $13.5 billion fortune to philanthropy after his death. Allen follows in the footsteps of former business partner Bill Gates and billionaire investor Warren Buffett, who have both pledged the vast majority of their wealth to philanthropy.
