"Inception" leads box office, "Apprentice" flops
LOS ANGELES - So what if "Inception" is incomprehensible? The costly sci-fi thriller opened at No. 1 at the weekend box office in North America on Sunday, pulling in $60.4 million from moviegoers happy to be vexed by one of the few big original pictures of the summer, according to estimates issued by distributor Warner Bros. Pictures.
Zsa Zsa Gabor breaks hip in fall, to have surgery
LOS ANGELES - Actress Zsa Zsa Gabor, now in her 90s, has broken her hip and will need surgery to replace it, her agent said on Sunday. Gabor, who uses a wheelchair to get around after a 2002 car accident, was watching television in bed on Saturday night when she fell out while reaching to answer the phone, agent John Blanchette said.
"Salt" adds flavor to summer movie menu
LOS ANGELES - She never quite says: "The name is Salt. Evelyn Salt." But Angelina Jolie, for all intents and purposes, is James Bond in her new film "Salt," and it's really no surprise that Jolie, the only female action star in Hollywood, more than measures up to Daniel Craig. Donning several guises while on the run in Columbia's spy thriller, she even -- with the help of considerable facial latex, mind you -- turns up as a guy in one scene. She makes a pretty ugly one, but it makes an amusing gag, a kind of acknowledgment that kick-ass action heroes now come in both genders. In Jolie's case, it's more convincing than ever because in those Lara Croft movies, she looked like an animated creature that popped out of a video game.
Polanski attends wife's concert in Switzerland
MONTREUX, Switzerland - Film director Roman Polanski, freed earlier this week from house arrest in Switzerland, attended a Saturday night concert given by his wife at the Montreux jazz festival. The 76-year-old Polanski arrived with festival founder Claude Nobs for the performance by French actress and singer Emmanuelle Seigner on the closing night of the annual event on Lake Geneva, according to a Reuters witness.
Wesley Snipes loses appeal in tax case
MIAMI - Actor Wesley Snipes is headed for jail after losing his appeal of a three-year prison sentence for failing to file income tax returns for 1999 through 2001. A federal appeals court on Friday upheld the 47-year-old actor's 2008 conviction in an Ocala, Florida, court for three misdemeanors stemming from felony tax charges.
Lindsay Lohan attorney says actress will go to jail
LOS ANGELES - Lindsay Lohan's new attorney, celebrity lawyer Robert Shapiro, said on Friday the troubled actress will got to jail as recently ordered by the judge overseeing her probation. Last week, California Superior Court Judge Marsha Revel ordered Lohan to begin serving a 90-day jail sentence on July 20 for violating the terms of her probation on drunk driving charges because Lohan had missed alcohol education classes.
U2 is world's top earning band: survey
NEW YORK - Irish rockers U2, who netted $130 million from their massive world tour and other deals, are the world's top-earning musicians, according to Forbes.com. The group made $10 million in ticket sales on each tour stop and, along with merchandising revenue, hit the top of the list ahead of Australian heavy metal group AC/DC, who earned $114 million from their worldwide tour.
Justin Bieber gets new comic book
MONTREAL - He may not be a superhero, but teen singing sensation Justin Bieber is certainly a superstar. And now he is getting own biography comic book, courtesy Bluewater Productions. The 32-page "Fame: Justin Bieber" comic, due out in October, will chronicle the 16-year-old singer's climb to current heartthrob status.
Taylor-King tour hits right note for fans and business
NASHVILLE , portions of which have become popular, pledge-inducing programing for PBS.
"Spider-Man" role presents opportunities for bands
NEW YORK for a tentative bow this fall, but he's not forsaking the four-piece band that he fronts.
