2 Italian sailors rescued from stricken sail boat

 AP - Thursday, April 9
WELLINGTON, New Zealand - Two Italian sailors were rescued Thursday after spending four days adrift on a broken-down yacht in the Pacific Ocean, rescue officials said.

Crew of the oil tanker Hellespont Trooper plucked Pietro Fresi, 64, and his son, Vittorio Fresi, 34, from their 34-foot (10.4 meter) yacht in waters about midway between New Zealand and Chile.
The tanker reached the yacht late Wednesday, but strong winds and high seas prevented the crew from rescuing the pair until early Thursday, according to Ross Henderson of the Rescue Coordination Center.
The pair sent out a mayday call early Monday after the mast snapped and the engine failed on their Italian-registered yacht, stranding them more than 2,200 miles (3,500 kilometers) from New Zealand.
"The two men, who maintained good spirits throughout their ordeal, were well-equipped, experienced sailors in good health," Henderson said.
An advisory was to be issued about the yacht, which was expected to break up and sink, to alert vessels transiting the ocean region.
The tanker, with the pair on board, will continue its voyage to Argentina.
