The Karachi Stock Exchange benchmark 100-share index <.KSE> ended 9.38 points, or 0.10 percent, lower at 9,657.79 points. Volume was 56.26 million shares compared with 94.44 million shares traded on Thursday. "Activity was dull because of security fears about tomorrow," said Farhan Seth, an analyst at Topline Securities. The anniversary of the birth of the Prophet Mohammed is on Saturday and is marked with religious processions. In 2006, fifty-seven people were killed in Karachi in an bomb attack on a congregation in a park. The attack sparked violence in Pakistan's commerical capital and the stock exchange shut for a day. Dealers said investors were also worried about who the next finance minister would be. Shaukat Tarin, the respected finance minister and veteran banker who negotiated an International Monetary Fund loan in 2008, said this week he was stepping down to focus on private business interests. [ID:nSGE61M03D] The KSE-index has shed two percent since his resignation announcement. Investors and international donors would prefer to see a financial expert rather than a politician become finance minister, analysts said. In the currency market, the rupee <PKR=> closed at 84.94/98 to the dollar compared with Thursday's close of 85.05/07 in the absence of any import payments but dealers expect the currency to weaken. The rupee hit a record closing low of 85.15 this month. The rupee has lost 0.88 percent against the dollar this year after losing 6.17 percent last year and a 22.12 percent slide in 2008. In the money market, short-term money rates were flat at 10.50 percent and dealers said they expected the central bank to conduct a reverse-repo on Monday because of scheduled inflows of 94 billion rupees scheduled. Banks will be closed on Saturday.
