Apple unveils new Macs for the holidays
SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> rolled out a new line of redesigned Mac computers on Tuesday, hoping to build up sales momentum for its biggest business heading into the all-important holiday season. Sporting new features such as touch-based mice and edge-to- edge glass, Apple hopes to sustain the fast-growing sales of its computers. Allaying initial worries about its premium pricing, Apple's Mac business has been surging despite a recession that has pinched consumer spending.
Space agencies, Google seek ways to save forests
OSLO - Space agencies and Google Inc <GOOG.O> are helping an international project to monitor forests by satellite to fight global warming, the head of an international earth observation group said on Tuesday. Deforestation from Brazil to Indonesia is blamed for emitting about a fifth of all greenhouse gases from human activities -- plants soak up carbon as they grow and release it when they burn or rot.
Apple smashes forecasts, stock hits record
SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> profits and sales streaked past Wall Street forecasts as iPhone and Mac sales hit quarterly records, sending its shares rocketing to all-time highs on Monday. Sales of Mac computers -- the largest single contributor to Apple's revenue -- jumped a better-than-foreseen 17 percent, but shipments of the closely watched iPhone were held back by problems in producing enough to meet demand, particularly abroad.
Google goes global with Apps
SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> said more than 2 million businesses now use its online office software, and the Web search leader is going global on Monday with an advertising campaign to lure customers away from Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> and IBM <IBM.N> products. The campaign, which starts Monday in countries including France, Japan and Britain, represents a rare foray by Google into mass-market advertising and underscores increasing competition to provide businesses with email and other office software.
Unspoken rules govern cell phone etiquette
NEW YORK - It may not seem like it when commuters are shouting down their cell phones to the dismay of other passengers but most Americans believe there are unspoken rules about mobile phone etiquette. Checking emails, sending text messages and making telephone calls while in the company of others are definite breeches of mobile manners.
Fake security software in millions of computers: Symantec
WASHINGTON - Tens of millions of U.S. computers are loaded with scam security software that their owners may have paid for but which only makes the machines more vulnerable, according to a new Symantec <SYMC.O> report on cybercrime. Cyberthieves are increasingly planting fake security alerts that pop up when computer users access a legitimate website. The "alert" warns them of a virus and offers security software, sometimes for free and sometimes for a fee.
Motorola rises ahead of next Android phone launch
NEW YORK - Shares in Motorola Inc <MOT.N> rose over 8 percent on Monday on investor anticipation that its second phone powered by Google Inc's <GOOG.O> Android system would be a hit at Verizon Wireless. Shares in Motorola rose 65 cents to $8.50 on New York Stock Exchange after popular technology blog boygeniusreport.com praised the upcoming device dubbed Droid, describing it as the best phone it had used since Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPhone.
U.S. video game sales up 1 percent in Sept; PS3 top: NPD
SAN FRANCISCO - Price cuts helped Sony Corp's <6758.T> Playstation 3 become the top-selling video game console for the first time since its release, as U.S. sales of video game gear and software in the United States rose a modest 1 percent in September from a year ago, a research group said on Monday. The PlayStation 3 dethroned long-running champ Nintendo <7974.OS> and its Wii console to take the top spot, according to NPD. Microsoft's <MSFT.O> Xbox 360 came in third.
Barnes & Noble's $259 e-reader challenges Kindle
NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO - Barnes & Noble Inc <BKS.N> on Tuesday unveiled its electronic reader in a challenge to Amazon.com Inc's <AMZN.O> dominant Kindle, featuring a color screen and the same $259 price, ahead of the holiday shopping season. Barnes & Noble said it would allow its users to share most books, a function that the Kindle currently does not allow. The device, dubbed the Nook, will use AT&T <T.N> for wireless and Google Inc's <GOOG.O> Android mobile platform.
Spotify to launch mobile offering with 3, HTC
LONDON - Sweden's Spotify, the European digital music service, will be available to customers of British mobile operator 3 through a new HTC Hero phone, the three companies said on Monday. Spotify, which recently announced a service on Apple's iPhone and Google phones, will be available on the 3 network from November, allowing users to access a huge range of music on their computers and mobile phones.
