Bangladesh jails 5 Islamic militants for bombings

CHITTAGONG, Bangladesh – A court in Bangladesh jailed five Islamic militants for eight years Tuesday over a string of bombings in a nearby resort town in 2005, a prosecutor said.
All those convicted Tuesday _ including explosives expert Jahidur Rahman Mizan _ belong to the banned radical Islamic group Jamatul Mujahedeen Bangladesh, public prosecutor M. Ayub Khan said.
The group seeks to establish Islamic rule in Muslim-majority Bangladesh, which is governed by secular laws. The group has been blamed for bombings at courts and at public rallies across Bangladesh in recent years.
Small handmade bombs exploded across the coastal town of Cox's Bazar on Aug. 17, 2005, as part of a countrywide bombing campaign. No one was wounded in the blasts at a court, a government office, a boarding house, a food shop and a bus terminal.
At the time, investigators and experts said it seemed the blasts were meant for publicity, not harm. Pamphlets with the group's agenda were found near the blast sites.
The militant group's top leaders, including founder Shaikh Abdur Rahman and his deputy Siddiqul Islam, were hanged two years ago for the killing of two judges in a separate 2005 bomb attack in southern Jhalakathi town.
