Obama and family back in Chicago for holiday weekend
CHICAGO (AFP) - – President Barack Obama and his family returned to their former home city of Chicago for a Memorial Day weekend stay to be interrupted by a brief presidential trip to oil-stricken Louisiana.
Air Force One touched down at Soldier Field at 7:45 pm (0045 GMT on Friday) with Obama, First Lady Michelle, their daughters Sasha and Malia, the president's mother-in-law Marian Robinson and First Dog Bo.
The first family plans to stay in Chicago over the three-day Memorial Day weekend, which on Monday commemorates US veterans lost in past wars. Obama represented the state of Illinois for four years prior to taking office in 2009.
The White House did not disclose the Obamas' agenda for their holiday weekend in Chicago, where they will stay at their family home in an upscale neighborhood.
Dozens of neighbors were on hand late Thursday to greet the first family when they arrived amid tight security measures.
Local media ventured that the president and his wife might go to the theater to see a play or watch a hockey game with the city's Blackhawks team.
One agenda item is known, however: Obama's visit Friday to the Gulf of Mexico, which is taking the brunt of the worst oil spill in US history.
During the scheduled three-hour visit, Obama will meet with Coast Guard Commandant Thad Allen, who is heading the federal response to the spill, and speak to reporters, the White House said.
On Monday, before returning to the White House, Obama will preside a remembrance ceremony for the fallen American troops at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elmwood, 47 miles (75 kilometers) southwest of Chicago.
