ShareThis May 28, 2010 8:08 a.m. EST Topics: human interest, people, disaster and accident, accident, human mishap, United States Kris Alingod - AHN News Contributor Long Beach, NY, United States (AHN) - A young man who welcomed the summer with a swim with friends at Long Beach has died after being overcome by waves. The Coast Guard suspended its search for the 23-year-old, identified in reports as Emanuel Tiburcio, late Thursday. Tiburcio was swimming with two friends the previous day when they were separated by a large wave. His friends made it to shore and contacted officials. Boats and helicopters were used to search an 85 square-mile area. Conditions were dangerous at the time of Tiburcio's disappearance, with 4-foot waves and water temperature at 58 degrees. “It is always difficult when we decide to suspend a search,” Mark Averill, a search and rescue coordinator for the Coast Guard Sector in Long Island Sound. “We saturated the area with assets while working with our port partners, and were unable to locate the missing swimmer, unfortunately.
