"A president now working with the premier, not against him," trilled the right-wing Jerusalem Post. "This time, publicly at least, there were none of the harsh demands, none of the hectoring, none of the patronising." "This is the morning of a very important day," Defence Minister Ehud Barak said of the meeting between the US president and Israelir premier after meeting US senators in Jerusalem. "The success of the prime minister's visit expresses the deep relationship between us and the United States, and between the Obama administration and ourselves," Barak said after talking with Netanyahu by phone. Tuesday's meeting saw the Israeli leader accorded all the trappings of a visiting head of state and the two leaders sought to project a friendly atmosphere, a marked contrast to the icy tone of their previous talks. Related article:Guns belonging to Israel PM's security detail 'missing' Relations plummeted to their lowest point in decades earlier this year following a high-profile spat over Israeli settlement building in occupied east Jerusalem. But this time, Netanyahu won praise for easing the blockade on Gaza, and a reaffirmation of what Obama declared were the "unbreakable" ties between Israel and the United States. He also managed to secure very public US backing for a move to direct talks with the Palestinians -- which Israel has long lobbied for. And he also managed to neatly sidestep a showdown over the potentially explosive issue of the partial freeze on settlement construction, which is due to end in September. "Relations have been repaired," Yediot Aharonot quoted a triumphant Netanyahu as saying after the talks. Asked how he had managed to get around the issue of the settlement freeze, Netanyahu smiled: "When you see a sign that says 'Caution - minefield,' you stay out," the paper quoted him as saying. "You take another route." "The Obama-Netanyahu summit: personal letters, bouquets of flowers and not a word about settlements," was the headline in the Haaretz daily. Ahead of the talks, there had been intense interest in how Netanyahu would handle the issue of the moratorium. But it was hardly even mentioned -- in public, at least. "The cautious observer must ask what was said about the difficult issues that remain unresolved," wrote the pro-government Israel HaYom, warning that the "friendly attitude radiated by the Americans could dissolve." One of the main outcomes of the summit was the US push for a shift to direct talks, which Israel backs. After speaking with Netanyahu, Israel's Barak said direct peace negotiations with the Palestinians could start soon. "I hope, and believe, that within a few weeks we will have started direct talks that will advance the prospects of peace," he said. The Palestinians have said they will only move to direct talks if Israel completely halts settlement construction -- which would entail extending the moratorium beyond September 26 and expanding its scope. But Obama finessed the issue by saying he hoped a shift to direct talks would happen before September 26. Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas said on Wednesday he wanted an Israeli "signal" on the key issues of security and borders before heeding calls for a resumption of direct peace talks. "We have presented our proposals to both the Americans and the Israelis and we are waiting for an Israeli impression and reaction," he told reporters during a visit to Ethiopia. Commentators in Israel warned that the new convivial atmosphere would not last forever. "After the false sweetness dissolves, Netanyahu will be asked about a peace plan and be asked to present maps," Alon Pinkas, a former Israeli consul general in New York, wrote in Maariv. "And then we will again talk of a crisis in relations and the Obama plan," he wrote.
