Nissan cuts production further in Japan
AFP - Saturday, November 15
TOKYO (AFP) - - Nissan Motor Co. said Friday it would further cut production in Japan of large and luxury cars meant for export to the United States and Europe as demand slumps.
Japan's third largest automaker said last month it would reduce production of its Infinity brand luxury cars and its Murano and Rogue sports utility vehicles by a total of 65,000 units between November and March.
Nissan said Friday it would slash production by another 72,000 units through March.
The cuts would reduce Nissan's total output in Japan by 9.7 percent from the 1.388 million vehicles it initially planned to produce in the year to March.
Nissan last month announced it was axeing 3,500 jobs worldwide and cut its full-year forecasts by two-thirds.
The global slowdown has badly shaken Japan's automakers, which in recent years have cashed in on worldwide demand for their smaller and more fuel-efficient cars.
Japan's largest automaker Toyota Motor Corp. said last week it was reviewing its expansion plans. The Nikkei newspaper said Friday that Toyota may delay production at a new plant in the United States.
