The Asian Tour used to sanction or co-sanction as many as eight events in China. But since the China Golf Association (CGA) joined South Korea and Australia to establish OneAsia last year, the country hosts just three significant tournaments -- Volvo China Open, Midea China Classic and Luxehills Open. Another OneAsia event, the Shandong Gold Cup, was axed this month, while the Omega China Tour no longer exists. China also hosts the prestigious HSBC Champions, but only a handful of local players are guaranteed places. While high-profile names like Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson have both tipped China to become a golfing powerhouse, Kyi Hla Han said that in contrast to places like South Korea and India, China was struggling. "We have a lot of young Korean boys, Indian boys and Thai boys showing great promise. Even in Southeast Asia we are seeing it, particularly in Malaysia and Singapore and even Indonesia," he told AFP. "That's why we started our Asian Development Tour, on the grounds of getting them to keep playing tournaments." "But I question China. It is China actually which hasn't been showing much growth. "The players are not playing. They can't play locally and they're not playing overseas. "You look at Korea, it's got a solid 20-tournament circuit, India has a solid 20 tournaments and Thailand has 25. Their boys are playing, but the Chinese don't have anything to play. "I think someone seriously needs to look after their affairs." The Asian Tour chief blames the CGA's decision to align itself with OneAsia, which has a 10-tournament schedule this year, although it plans to boost this to 15 next year. OneAsia's eligibility criteria guarantee a minimum of 20 places to the China Golf Tour at overseas events, but often less than half that turn up. Earlier this year, OneAsia said Chinese golfers were staying away because "the travel time and cost was a deterrent to them and a majority of them were not confident of being in contention". Kyi Hla Han said it was a worry. "The Chinese players, there's only about six or eight of them playing all the Tour events. I don't know what China is doing for its development," he said. "I think the potential for China has actually lessened. "When we had our really good relationship with the CGA we had seven or eight tournaments in China and now they are down to three." The CGA's relations with the Asian Tour have been strained since its switch to OneAsia, but Kyi Hla Han said he still wanted to work with the association and was confident he could once again take eight events to the country. "I am very confident of being able to bring eight tournaments back," he said. "I think Chinese golfers' playing opportunities have lessened in the last two years. The Omega China Tour has gone and they have almost no events to play in." China's best-known player remains the pioneering Zhang Lianwei, the first Chinese to win a European PGA Tour event. Liang Wenchong is their current number one. But there are few others of note.
