KIEV (AFP) - – Opposition leader Viktor Yanukovich was on course to win Ukraine's presidency, exit polls showed Sunday, after an election that punished pro-Western politicians and paved the way for closer Russia ties. The pro-Moscow Yanukovich's tense run-off contest against Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, a champion of EU integration, had inflamed political tensions and sparked warnings of a repeat of the 2004 Orange Revolution protests. If confirmed, the results would mark a startling comeback by Yanukovich, the loser in the last presidential polls in 2004 when his initial victory was thrown out by the courts as fraudulent after the uprising. Yanukovich grabbed 48.7 percent of the vote compared to Tymoshenko's 45.5 percent, with another 5.5 percent of votes going to "against all," according to the National Exit Poll conducted by research centres in Kiev. Another exit poll by Ukraine's ICTV television found that Yanukovich had 49.8 percent of the vote compared to Tymoshenko's 45.2 percent, with 5 percent going to "against all." Related article: Anger and broken dreams as Ukraine votes The Orange Revolution had raised hopes of a new future in the ex-Soviet republic of 46 million people, strategically located between the EU and Russia, but the dreams crumbled amid domestic infighting and a dire economic crisis. The hero of the Orange Revolution, President Viktor Yushchenko, was bundled out in the first round in January in a humiliating fifth-place finish with his aims of building a Ukraine orientated firmly away from Russia in tatters. Yushchenko's relationship with his former Orange Revolution ally Tymoshenko descended into farcical bickering as Ukraine was rocked by the economic crisis, its GDP plunging 15 percent in 2009, more than any other major European economy. Even if the exit poll results are confirmed in the final numbers, there remains a risk of political turmoil with the relatively close results possibly being challenged in the courts or even with street protests. The two candidates had both traded accusations of plotting to rig the vote, and Tymoshenko had vowed to mobilise her supporters to protest on the streets if she detected rigging by her rival. "It is too early to declare a winner," Tymoshenko's right-hand man, Deputy Prime Minister Olexander Turchynov, said in televised remarks after the exit polls. "We could not avoid extensive falsifications," he added. Dozens of blue tents surrounded by hundreds of Yanukovich supporters have appeared around key official buildings in Kiev, in a sign that preparations were already underway. A senior interior ministry official, Volodymyr Mayevski, said Yanukovich had made a request for a gathering of 50,000 people in Kiev but this was not confirmed by the candidate's Regions Party. The telegenic Tymoshenko had sought to win votes by pledging to bring Ukraine into the European Union, but critics call her an opportunist and point out her warm ties with Russian strongman Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Many dislike Yanukovich for his fumbling, inarticulate speech and his criminal record, which includes convictions for theft and assault in the Soviet era that were erased by the courts in 1978. But Tymoshenko has also had her own brushes with the law, having been briefly held in prison on forgery and gas smuggling charges in 2001. In a parting shot at Tymoshenko and Yanukovich, Yushchenko scoffed as he voted "against all" on Sunday that Ukraine would be "ashamed" of the result whoever won.
