The funeral of Hwang Jang-Yop, who died Sunday aged 87, drew some 200 mourners including Unification Minister Hyun In-Taek and former President Kim Young-Sam. Hwang, a former senior official and tutor to the North's current leader Kim Jong-Il, defected in 1997 during a visit to Beijing and came to South Korea. He became one of the bitterest of the regime he once served. He was found dead, apparently of natural causes, on the same day the North mounted a triumphal military parade at which Kim's son and heir apparent Kim Jong-Un appeared prominently. "Your defection dealt the deadliest blow to the North Korean dictatorship," Park Kwan-Yong, a former parliamentary speaker, said in an address next to Hwang's coffin draped with the national flag. Placed near Hwang's smiling portrait was the medal of honour. Suzanne Scholte, a US activist, said Hwang had felt he could never be forgiven by the relatives he had left in the North. "This is the evil burden that every defector who has escaped North Korea also carries," she said at the funeral. "You cannot make them understand that it is Kim Jong-Il's responsibility, not theirs." Hwang had to live under police guard following several death threats. He faced restrictions on his activities and speeches under previous left-leaning governments which pursued a policy of reconciliation with the North. The incumbent conservative government posthumously awarded Hwang the Order of Civil Merit, paving the way for him to be interred in the national cemetery in the central city of Daejeon. But the decision sparked controversy over whether he deserved the honours. Critics said Hwang had never reflected publicly on his past as a top ideologue who helped build the communist state's dictatorial regime. "Its doubtful whether he deserves a medal which is given to those who made significant contributions to raising national welfare and development," Chung Sye-Kyun, a senior member of the opposition Democratic Party, said Wednesday. "He laid the theoretical foundation of the North's juche (self-reliance) ideology and is also responsible for the Norths dismal situation." A telephone survey of 700 adults showed about 41 percent agreed with the governments decision to honour Hwang, while 36 percent disagreed, the Dong-A Ilbo daily said on its English-language website.
