Tens of thousands of Muslims, mostly young men, chanted "Go India, go back" and "We want freedom" as they assembled in the main city of Srinagar to offer prayers on the festival of Eid al-Fitr. "The protests are a form of referendum showing that Kashmiris want freedom from India," said leading separatist and key Muslim cleric Umar Farooq, as riot police were deployed across Srinagar in a bid to keep a lid on tensions. Government forces have been battling for months to contain violent demonstrations in the mainly Muslim region that were ignited by the killing of a 17-year-old student by police on June 11. A total of 70 protesters and bystanders -- some children -- have been killed, mostly by security forces who have fired on demonstrators after being pelted with stones. At a prayer ground in Srinagar, tens of thousands attended Eid prayers where Farooq read the names of the 70 people killed, sparking cries of "Indians leave our Kashmir." He later called on people to march to the city's historic and business centre of Lal Chowk. Protesters streamed towards Lal Chowk where they hoisted green Islamic and Pakistani flags atop a clock tower, shouting: "Our nation, we'll decide its fate." Some masked men hoisted flags of the pro-independence Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front as people sat on rooftops and cheered. Demonstrators came in cars, buses and jeeps emblazoned with Islamic flags to join the protests in Srinagar, summer capital of Kashmir, which is in the grip of a 20-year revolt against Indian rule that has left over 47,000 people dead. "India should read the writing on the wall and take steps to resolve this lingering dispute forever," said another top separatist, Yasin Malik, as five men built a human pyramid to scale an electric pole and hoist an Islamic flag. As the protests took place, police freed leading separatist Syed Ali Geelani who was arrested earlier in the week when he said he would call for stepped-up demonstrations to press India to punish security men involved in the recent killings. Most protesters dispersed peacefully, but some "miscreants among them set fire to a government building and attacked security bunkers," a police official told AFP, declining to be identified. Farooq condemned the violence and blamed "anti-movement elements" for induging in such acts. Security forces also fired shots to disperse protesters near a shrine after they set a police vehicle and a police post on fire. The fresh protests came as India's media reported New Delhi was considering a "peace package" for Kashmir, including a partial lifting of the widely detested Armed Forces Special Powers Act, which gives security forces broad powers to shoot, arrest and search. "The time for taking half-hearted steps like partial withdrawal of Special Powers Act has gone. Now the talks should focus on the bigger issue of resolving the future of Kashmir," Farooq said. He called for "a decisive dialogue process" between India, Pakistan and the separatist leadership of Kashmir on the disputed region. Indian Kashmir's Chief Minister voiced his anger at the protests. "Today's protests were uncalled for, as people wanted to celebrate Eid after a month-long fasting," Omar Abdullah said in a statement. "And the violence like today's will result in setback for any initiative that the Government can think for breaking the impasse," he said. Nuclear-armed India and Pakistan each hold part of the Himalayan territory but claim it in full.
