Internet watchdog backs down over naked girl image
AFP - 2 hours 18 minutes ago
LONDON (AFP) - - An Internet watchdog has reversed a decision to block users from viewing a Wikipedia page showing a picture of a naked girl, after protests that the image is widely available on a rock band record sleeve.
The online encyclopedia had slammed the clampdown on the page for German hard rock group The Scorpions, which it said left most British residents unable to edit entries on the whole website.
At the weekend the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) added the Wikipedia Scorpions entry to its blacklist of websites because of what was "considered to be a potentially illegal indecent image of a child under the age of 18."
The photograph in question was an album cover of the German heavy metal band's 1976 album "Virgin Killer."
But on Tuesday the watchdog issued a new statement, saying that "in light of the length of time the image has existed and its wide availability, the decision has been taken to remove this webpage from our list.
"Any further reported instances of this image which are hosted abroad, will not be added to the list. Any further reported instances of this image which are hosted in the UK will be assessed in line with IWF procedures," it added.
The IWF blacklist is important because it is used on a voluntary basis by 95 percent of British-based residential Internet service providers (ISPs), effectively helping to decide what they block.
The Wikimedia Foundation, of which Wikipedia is a part, welcomed the reversal of the IWF decision.
"We are grateful to the IWF for making this swift decision, and to thousands of Internet users from around the world for their outpouring of support," said the Foundation's executive director Sue Gardner.
"Millions of Britons now have access to all of Wikipedia, and volunteers can resume their important editing work," she added.
