Microsoft co-founder relaunches tech patent suit

SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> co-founder Paul Allen relaunched a wide-ranging patent lawsuit against Apple Inc <AAPL.O>, Google Inc <GOOG.O>, Facebook and others with specific allegations that the companies are illegally using technology owned by his company. Interval Licensing LLC, a small research company set up by Allen in 1992, originally filed a broad patent suit in federal court in Seattle in August, but Judge Marsha Pechman dismissed it on the grounds that it did not specify any actual products or devices. The revised suit was filed by Interval on Tuesday.

SEC probes trading in private Internet firms: reports

BANGALORE - The U.S. securities regulator is looking into trading in privately-held Internet companies including Facebook and Twitter, media reports said, citing people familiar with the inquiry. The Securities and Exchange Commission has sent letters to several people trading in the stock of these companies, seeking information about topics that include how such funds are valuing shares of those firms, the Wall Street Journal reported.

NEW YORK - Groups including the United Nations, Harvard University, Google Inc and an organization co-founded by actor George Clooney are launching a project using satellites to "watch" Sudan for war crimes before a vote that could split the African country in two. The Satellite Sentinel Project, which begins on Wednesday, is meant to provide an "early warning system" for human rights and security violations before the January 9 referendum on whether to divide Sudan into north and south.

SAP must pay Oracle some interest on $1.3 billion verdict

SAN FRANCISCO - SAP AG <SAPG.DE> must pay Oracle Corp <ORCL.O> prejudgment interest on a recent $1.3 billion copyright infringement verdict, but not at the formula suggested by Oracle, according to a judge's ruling filed on Tuesday. Oracle had sought more than $211 million in interest after winning a high stakes trial in an Oakland federal courtroom last month.

China's rare earths export cut raises trade concerns

SYDNEY - China's move to slash export quotas on rare earth minerals -- vital in a slew of high-tech products -- has raised fresh international trade concerns, and Japan's Sony Corp <6758.T> vowed on Wednesday to reduce its reliance on the minerals. China, which produces about 97 percent of the global supply of rare earth minerals, cut its export quotas by 35 percent for the first half of 2011 versus a year ago, saying it wanted to preserve ample reserves. It also cautioned that it has not decided on the quotas for the second half of the year.

Apple sued over apps privacy issues; Google may be next

BANGALORE - Two separate groups of iPhone and iPad users have sued Apple Inc <AAPL.O> alleging that certain software applications were passing personal user information to third-party advertisers without consent. In the lawsuits seeking class action, filed in a federal court in California, the plaintiffs sought a ban on passing of user information without consent and monetary compensation, according to case documents.

Barnes & Noble fails to end Nook lawsuit

NEW YORK - Barnes & Noble Inc <BKS.N> lost its bid to dismiss Spring Design Inc's lawsuit accusing the largest U.S. bookseller of illegally copying a screen design for the popular Nook electronic book reader. Spring Design will be allowed to pursue claims accusing Barnes & Noble of misappropriating trade secrets, breach of contract and unfair competition, according to a ruling in the federal court in San Jose, California.
