Are zombies the new vampires in Hollywood?
LOS ANGELES - What's that shambling over the curb toward the local theater? No, behind the vampires. Could it be a stampede of the undead about to take over Hollywood? Cable channel AMC's new drama series "The Walking Dead" debuts on Halloween, and more than a half-dozen zombie-related feature projects are on their way to theaters -- including Friday's "Resident Evil: Afterlife" -- or in development at the studios. With this many flesh-rotting grave-jumpers on tap, could zombies be making a run -- or, perhaps, a very slow, clumsy walk -- at the pop culture crown?
Biel, Mendes and Weisz go behind the camera for Glamour
LOS ANGELES - Look out Hollywood! Three actresses are delving into movie directing for the first time, thanks to Glamour Magazine. Jessica Biel, Eva Mendes and Oscar-winner Rachel Weisz are each directing a short film for the magazine's annual "Glamour Reel Moments."
Oscar hopefuls look to make splash in Toronto
TORONTO - Like debutantes at a cotillion, movies that harbor Oscar hopes are about to be presented to the world at the Toronto International Film Festival, which got underway Thursday night. At first blush, many of them sport the kind of credentials that automatically get the attention of Academy voters: Danny Boyle, whose "Slumdog Millionaire" swept the Oscars in 2009 after winning the People's Choice Award in Toronto, is back with his newest film, "127 Hours"; double Oscar winner Hilary Swank will stake her claim for further consideration with the crusading legal drama "Conviction"; and Colin Firth, who was nominated last year for "A Single Man," is auditioning for back-to-back nods for his latest, "The King's Speech," in which he plays a stammering King George VI.
Joaquin Phoenix not quitting acting just yet
TORONTO - Is he or isn't he? Quitting acting, that is. Friday night, the maddeningly enigmatic Joaquin Phoenix will be in the spotlight as the Toronto International Film Festival unveils Casey Affleck's "I'm Still Here," the is-it-real-or-is-it-an-elaborate-put-on documentary about Phoenix's self-proclaimed retirement from acting to focus on a hip-hop career.
Hokey hockey musical kicks off Toronto film fest
TORONTO - "Score: A Hockey Musical," the movie that opened the Toronto Film Festival on Thursday, is both a departure and a return to tradition for one of Canada's signature cultural events. The festival, seen as a starting point in the race for the Oscars, raised the ire of the local arts community last year when it ditched its tradition of showcasing a Canadian film on opening night and chose British evolutionist drama "Creation."
NBC devising "Office" succession plan
LOS ANGELES - Want to know who's replacing Steve Carell on "The Office"? You're probably in for a long wait. Sources say the final decision likely won't be made until after the upcoming seventh season wraps.
Sole new entry "Resident Evil" to top box office
LOS ANGELES - "Resident Evil: Afterlife" should set a new opening record for the zombie fright franchise when the 3D film opens Friday as the only new wide release at the weekend box office in North America. The fourth entry in the Screen Gems/Sony video game-spawned series is set to earn at least $25 million during its first three days. Franchise originator Paul W.S. Anderson directed "Afterlife, with his wife Milla Jovovich again starring.
"Virginity Hit" a bawdy crowdpleaser
NEW YORK - Essentially the first feature-length YouTube video, "The Virginity Hit" updates the horny-teenager movie to the Internet era. It's not surprising that Will Ferrell and Adam McKay are among the film's producers, as the comedy essentially plays like an elongated version of something you might see on their "Funny or Die" website. Director-screenwriters Andrew Gurland and Huck Botko are no strangers to the mockumentary format; their credits include the cult film "Mail Order Wife" and the screenplay for "The Last Exorcism," in theatrical release.
Actor Ian Somerhalder passionate about environment
TORONTO - He was best known for his breakout role as Boone Carlyle in "Lost", but these days, Ian Somerhalder is winning accolades for his turn as vampire Damon Salvatore in the TV show "The Vampire Diaries." Somerhalder, 31, has been busy in Atlanta, Georgia, filming season 2 of the series after spending a difficult summer being pulled in two different directions: promoting the CW network show ahead of its return on Thursday, and helping raise environmental awareness in his home state of Louisiana following the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
Willow Smith, 9, signs record deal with Jay-Z
LOS ANGELES - Willow Smith, the nine-year-old daughter of actor Will Smith, has signed a record deal with rapper Jay-Z and her first single is already kicking up a storm on the Internet. Jay-Z told radio host Ryan Seacrest in an interview on Thursday that he thought Willow had a superstar career in front of her based on her first hip-hop single "Whip My Hair."
