ShareThis March 13, 2010 9:00 a.m. EST Topics: lifestyle and leisure, human interest, offbeat, curiosity, travel and commuting, United States Windsor Genova - AHN News Writer New York, NY, United States (AHN) - Some 3,000 New York City cab drivers overcharged passengers 100 times while thousands more overcharged once to illegally earn some $8.3 million the past two years, the Taxi and Limousine Commission bared on Friday. The finding was the result of an investigation of a passenger's complaint of higher fare. The TLC, upon reviewing some 1.8 million taxi trips recorded on a GPS data, learned that drivers were switching their meters to the suburban fare code, which is double the fare on city limits trips. The average overcharge is $4 to $5 per trip, according to TLC. The TLC is preparing sanctions against erring drivers, including possible revocation of their license and fines. It also plans to modify taxi meters so it will alert passengers when the driver presses the Rate Code 4 used only for trips to Nassau or Westchester Counties.
